The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel - Asbury Park

Personnaly checked this hotel last month. The renovations looked good and decided to book it. A section of floor tile in our bathroom did not have grout, no toilet paper and soap holder in shower. That this is a great hotel on the beach in a progressive beach town where there is always about eight things going on, even in off months! The star of the show is the ocean, and this hotel allows you access to it, either with an ocean front room or by walking across a very small street to the boardwalk!!

I am originally from NJ and now live in TX. As part of our vacation I wanted to show my kids the NJ shore before we drove back home. I picked this hotel due to the reviews and location. The beach was convenient (right across the street), but the boardwalk was closed, so we would have to drive anyway to give them that experience. Our hotel room's window […] was broken (off it's track, you could push it out some on one side), there was no chair or anything other than the bed to sit on, no toilet paper, no soap, not enough towels (although there is a surcharge per extra person so they were very much aware of how many people would be in the very small room), and it took the a/c a very long time to cool the room off. The bathroom had literally no where to hang any of the wet towels or bathing suits as there were no bars or hooks of any kind. It was rather disappointing. The elevators smelled, some had vinyl flooring, the carpeted one had a giant stain, and the hotel was staffed by teenagers. I have no idea how this hotel was rated three stars, we splurged as this hotel was much pricier with the added charges per child. Beautiful hotel. Please note bell services and breakfast services are limited to the weekends only. Parking is limited and the pool area could use updating. Rooms are clean and spacious and comfortable. Staff is friendly and professional.

This hotel could not have been more perfect for a get-away to the Jersey Shore. It had nearly all of the amenities one could want-complimentary coffee & tea in the mornings, a great bar with tasty food, a full restaurant, pool with cabanas, outdoor dining, and a great location. The only thing missing was breakfast, even through room service it was not […] available. The beach is literally across the street-very clean and quiet. There is also a great bar/restaurant nearby where they hold bonfires and have a fantastic music scene-something Asbury Park is definitely known for! Be warned, they are still undergoing some construction on parts of the ground floor, the elevators and the balcony on the mezzanine is not complete yet. The hotel was beautiful, we had a nice view of the ocean, the only thing we were not happy about, was the air condition, it was'nt cool enough

Very Poor Parking for Guest Cars. Pay to Play internet $10.00 for 24hrs.

Overall, the hotel was acceptable and did get the requested ocean view. Guests will see the remnants of what at one time was an elegant seaside hotel. Though close to the Stone Pony Club (of Bruce Springsteen fame) it was a little disconcerting at 11PM late arrival to have late teens / early 20's drunk and staggering into the hotel. Though the rooms were clean upon arrival the lamps had all been unplugged so not quite welcoming into a nicely lit room. We then had to hunt for the outlets to get it lit. Having the bed closest to the A/C unit, I noticed that the condensation was spilling onto the floor leaving the carpet constatnly damp on one side of the bed. The blower did not seem to be fully adjustable it felt colder and could not be regulated. The register is about 5-6 feet above the floor and blasting out air. I slept fully under the comforter (head included) so as not to be in the direct line of draft. WiFi was on a charge, which we chose to forego. The biggest problem is for parking. I called the hotel to check on arrangements and was told that there were 50 spaces available. However on arival, i was told that if no spaces were available in the back, we'd have to park on the street which meters parking at $1 per hour / $10 daily 9AM-midnight 7 days a week. THe lot was full for most of our stay and di not appear to be monitored. This situation was the most objectionable. When mentioned to the desk clerk at check-out, she apologized saying that the hotel's negotiations with the town for the use of a vacant lot acreoss the street would constantly fall through ad the township would not accept any of the hotel's offers. I chose the hotel for its proximity to the Sandy Hook beaches, there seeming to be no other hotels (the Empress a few blocks down being the only seen alternative) in the immediate beach area of which I was well familiar. Excellent Staff! Quick! There was a room with an ATM, vending machine, and computers. There was a convenience store and bar/restaurant inside. Clean.

This is a great old building, with renovated rooms. That are nice looking. The staff could be more friendly and service oriented. At this high cost per night, more attention should be paid to details in the rooms, such as lights and tv. There were lots of wires everywhere, and no gargage containers in the room. Unfortunately the AC broke down, and the rooms didn't have enough air. We were in the 7th floor, my girls are 2 and 3 years old, and the receptionist says, open the windows. How in the world am I going to do that? what if my girls get close to the windows... no way!! Reason why we spent most of the day outsite. I went to Asbury Park to relax and watch the fire works. It was perfect for that

As someone who once worked in the service industry, I tend to overlook minor problems and tip heavily. That said, I also know when things are terribly wrong, as they are at the Berkeley Hotel. Location fantastic, and that's all she wrote for the positives. Elevator rickety and took 20 minutes, so we walked the 6 flights up and down to our room, only […] to find ourselves caught in a warren of ballrooms and locked stairwells. I was waiting for Jack Nicholson to pop out at any time, calling Heeeeerres Johnny! The room was small, and stuffy, we could not control the a/c. Right next to the Asbury Park beach and boardwalk both of which are excellent. Hotel rooms have excellent views of the ocean and the beach.

Recent stay 5/20-5/22/11 Pros: Close to the boardwalk, modern decor, clean, great places to grab food and shop all within walking distance. Rates were very reasonable. Staff was nice and there was always a doorman/bellhop available. Cons: Parking is first come first serve and with weddings both Fri and Sat nights there were no spaces to be had. Street […] parking isn't cheap and meter had to be fed from 9am-9pm. The noise level from the after party of both weddings and bar patrons leaving the bar across the street made it impossible to sleep. We are a couple in our 30's with a 9mo old so we get it but screaming and singing outside of a hotel from 2-5am..come on! Our room didn't have a cd or dvd player or even radio nor did the TV have any reception except for channel 2.... a bit archaic if you ask me. This was our first time is Asbury Park and won't be our last, as we love what the boardwalk and beach had to offer. However, we wont be returning to the Berkeley Hotel... Lisez la suite

The hotel itself is great. It's right at the end of the Boardwalk and close to the Paramount Theatre, the Wonderbar and The Stone Pony. For music fans - it's the ultimate spot to stay. The room is a little better than a Hilton or Sheraton. The decoration is unique and a little funky. Bathroom was good but needed maintenance (no plug for the sink). We […] asked for maintenance to fix it but they did not. That was disappointing. The additional charge for wi-fi was a little bit annoying but what was more annoying was the inability for us to log on and purchase 24 hours of internet. The site that took the credit card info would not recognize our Canadian Visa card. Continental breakfast was $9.00 - a bit on the steep side for muffins, cereal, fruit and coffee. It's not a high-service hotel. You will have to wait for things. But I love the interior and it is right on the beach, near the boardwalk where everything is.

Great hotel...asked for a ocean view and am SO happy they had one open. Seeing the sunrise over the ocean was awesome. The room was very clean, though there were some food reminants on the floor and on the side of the bed :( Also checked for bedbugs and luckily there were none! We were in town to see a show across the street at the Paramount and the […] locaiton was perfect! No need to worry about driving. There was street parking 1 1/2 blocks away that we didn't need to pay for, otherwise you might try the hotel's lot (which was full) or you have to move your car by 9am at many parking spots :( When you're in town be sure to check out The Twisted Tree Cafe on Cookman St. SO YUMMY! although the hotel room have being renovated, the lobby and elevators have not, teh bar also needs lighting and work. it stated that the breakfast was 8$8 and included cold cuts and cheese, it was actually $11 and was cereal and danishes.. over all tehy have made great improvements in the hotel. i will stay again, but eat breakfast on teh boardwalk […] . the hotel has aspirations...or maybe it did. it's hard to know if it's fading or up and coming. There decor was mid-century hip but repairs were sorely needed (chipped paint, work bathroom fixtures) and the bed and pillow was like sleeping on rocks. BUT, there was a great view of the ocean. My husband and I had a recent overnight stay, and had a great time. It's a huge hotel located across the street from the ocean, with very cool and funky furnishings. The staff was friendly. The room was clean except for the floor. The room was comfortable, except it was difficult to control the thermostat (either very cold or hot). I go here all the time. It is a decent hotel, but NOT a good value. Basically a clean room is all you get for your money. They are supposed to have breakfast but they usually only have coffee and bagels. You have to pay a nightly fee to use their WiFi! But they do seem to have a hotel monopoly in the neighborhood...

or the Convention Center, this is your hotel. Get the dinner package - well worth it!

This hotel, from what I understand, was newly re-modeled. Asbury Park is on the up and up, lots of cichy places are opening up all over the place. This hotel is an example of the economic revitalization going on nearby. It was comfortable and clean, with a lot of nice boutique stylings.

Hotel was conveniently located for the concert hall nest door. Several Bars in the area including the hotel bar had good drinks and food. One area bar had a bonfire on the beach which was cool. Just park and walk.

lerk was unfriendly and did not explain services ec. Turned on water and there was brown water coming out. The room was not well insulated, you could here everyones conversation in the rooms next door. The room was very modern and presentable. The bed slept great. The remote did not work.

Our room faced the front of the building and you could hear everyone entering and leaving the hotel all night long from the 5th floor! When that noise settled down, you could hear the toilet running all night long!

The Berkeley Hotel was terrible! The staff was rude and not helpful at all!! when I talked with the sales manager Shannon about a problem we were having she told me if I change my attitude she would help me and if I didn't then to bad, she would not do a thing to accommodate me! I was in tears! This was the night before my wedding, I was already stressed […] and did not need another thing to worry about! I had over 30 people booked in this hotel and think we should have been treated better! There was no parking, so my guest had to keep running to the meter to add money so they weren't ticketed. When I asked Shannon about this, she said you were never told you or your guest would have complimentary parking. There was a parking lot but we were refused access by security. There were children running and playing all over the lobby (out of control) running into everyone and lounged all over! It was uncomfortable to sit in the lobby, if you could find a spot open! The only person who was friendly and helpful was the man at the door. But of course he could not do anything to help but be nice, which no one else could take the second it would take to do. Not even a smile! Their moto should be if you don't like it tough, go stay some where else! DO NOT STAY AT THE BERKELEY OCEANFRONT HOTEL!!!!! Lisez la suite

This was a business visit so not much time for amenities. Hotel was fine-a little quiet but OK.

AS EXPECTED, EVEN THOUGH I GOT THERE AT NOON I HAD TO PARK ON THE STREET BUT BECAUSE I GOT THERE EARLY I WAS ABLE TO GET A SPOT RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE HOTEL. IT WAS A BIT HARD TO KEEP IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD THAT I NEEDED TO FEED THE PARKING METERS BUT AT LEAST I GOT AN ALL DAY METERED SPOT. THERE IS ALSO 2HOUR SPOTS! ON THE OTHER HAND THE HOTEL WAS ABLE […] TO GIVE ME A ROOM AT NOON INSTEAD OF AT CHECK-IN. THAT WAS GREAT! AS FOR THE HOTEL IT HAD A VERY NICE LOBBY, FULL BAR, AND WE LOVED THE REST. W/ OUTSTANDING BUT PRICEY(AS USUAL) FOOD. WE ATE THERE ONCE AND ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. AS EXPECTED THE ELEVATORS WERE VERRRY SLOOOW! THE ROOM WAS LARGE AND DATED BUT LIKE THE HOTEL ITSELF, WAS VERY CHARMING. IT WAS FAIRLY CLEAN AND ROOM SERVICE WAS OK. THE BEST PART OF THE HOTEL IS HOW CLOSE IT IS TO THE BEACH. Stayed here Labor Day weekend with a couple of friends. Great value on spacious room with ocean view. Poolside bar and lounge area. Everything within walking distance. I will stay here again. No complaints. Recommend.

We had called ahead to check on parking because we didn't want to end up at the meter overnight. They were having several weddings during our stay, but we did get parking in the hotel lot with no issues. The front desk was very helpful and when our key wouldn't work to our room the first time, they gave us a suite with the metal key AND the magnetized […] key. The room was adequate, but somewhat dirty. There was dirt and a dead moth on the window sill. The windows were foggy and old and there were never enough towels in the room. There was a spare pillow for the pull out couch but no blanket. The sheets didn't fit the beds properly, and the mattresses were "shredding". The room was nice sized though. We liked the closeness of the hotel to the boardwalk and we enjoyed being a "bit" off the beaten path, meaning, the crowds were not horrendous until possibly Sunday (the word must have gotten out that the hurricane had no impact). The drink and food prices at the hotel were pretty extreme, so if we come back, we'll BYOB. All in all it was fairly inexpensive for the room and the beach wasn't too bad. This was my first time staying in Asbury since retiring from the school system. Enjoyed being near the beach and using the boardwalk. The resturants on the beach are fabulous. However, the htel could do a better job on keeping the carpets clean. Also, the towels,washcloths and linens were dingy. I was totally surprised with age/coloration of these  […] items. When we arrived in our room we discovered that the lock on the door adjoining the hotel room next to our room was broke and could not be locked. There were no wash clothes and only two towels even though we reserved the room for our family of four. The second day our room was not cleaned until after 4PM! They did not give us wash cloths again and only […] provided us with two clean towels. They did not clean the room properly. The bathroom was barely touched and the room was not vacuumed. On our third day the elevators broke and we were staying on the 6th floor. We had to wait nearly 2 hours to check out until the elevators were repaired. Also, there was absolutely no information provided to us regarding the accomodations offered at the hotel such as the location of the fitness center and pool. When I called the front desk to ask where the fitness was located the person said "on the 1st floor" and hung up. Overall the hotel is very nice and clean but the service is absolutley horrible. The overall impression is that of an aera gone by. Slightly seedy in all areas. The bed linens were lumpy as well as the mattress as well. The upgrade to an 'oceanview' room was not worth it. Partial view over tall buildings directly in front. The elevators were unacceptable. Dim lighting, creeking noises and did not completely line up with teh floor.Scary! Stay there if you are in a wedding party & its not so bad for one day. My kids want to be in that area close to the sprinkler park. The rooms are renovated but pretty poorly done.The fridge which they charge for did not work. We arrive to check-in, shower and head out to our event, but were informed we had to look for parking out on the street due to a wedding in the hotel that used up all the hotel parking spaces. The hotel needs to provide services if it wants to command the rate charged, The rooms were small and tacky. The hall were so dark you couldn't see. The bathroom was poorly designed. over all the location was the best part of the hotel, but it was not worth the price

Don't be scared off by negative reviews on this or other sites. We almost canceled because of bad reviews and we would have missed out on a great vacation. I suspect that the negative reviews were from when the Berkeley was in the process of being renovated? Not sure. The quality and appearance of the room and the lobby were GREAT. I was especially […] nervous about comments that the air conditioning was inadequate and that was NOT the case. The hotel is RIGHT on the beach and we all had a great time. The hotel was nice, the lobby, pool and decor were great. The beds were hard, not terrible just hard. The hotel is right near the beach. The hotel staff was not on top of everything. We had a dog with us and were informed that not more than a 5min walk from the hotel there was a pet friendly beach... on a 100 degree day a 5 min walk without the promise […] of water is a lot for a dog. The beach is only pet friendly before 9am and after 5pm.. a small fact the staff did not know or did not share. They were also very rude to us at check out. Other than that it was a nice experience.
