"Great value in a prime location"
The Union Square location is convenient, and this European-style hotel is friendly. Don't expect big rooms or modern bathrooms - but everything is impeccably maintained. Beds were very comfortable! No AC, but ceiling fans are a plus.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Noisy but nice"
Being right off Union Square and alongside the cable car line, there are always sounds of activity - cable car bells, musicians in the square, etc. But the room was comfortable, the internet and TV and shower all worked, and a walk in closet was an unusual feature. Cookies, apples, and popcorn in the lobby make it feel like home.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Would stay there again"
We were at this hotel for several nights and found the hotel clean, the service was great and its location very central. The only reason I gave our room comfort a 3 was because the corner room (with twin beds) was quite small, but we didn't spend much time in the room; so not a big deal …. in addition, it was nice to have pillow options.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great hotel in a fantastic location"
We enjoyed our four night stay in this lovely hotel. It is a great location for easy access to the cable car line and the buses. We didn't have time for any shopping but still enjoyed the hustle and bustle of union center. Some reviewers have mentioned noise but we were not bothered by the normal sounds of the city- but we were on the 13th floor. The […] only minor complaint I have about this hotel is the lack of water pressure. Maybe the 13th floor was unlucky in that regard. The staff are very friendly and the cafe served up a tasty breakfast in a hurry. Highly recommend The Chancellor! Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
what a wonderful hotel. the room was nice and the tub divine. love the rubber ducky and bath salts. Staff are superb. so very pleasedAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Close to Everything!"
I stayed 2 nights at the Chancellor after extending a work trip (from another hotel in San Francisco). Big points for the location as it's close to Union Square for shopping, on a trolley line for sightseeing & a few short blocks walk from BART (train) or Bus lines so you can get anywhere in the city quickly. The rooms are small & cozy - just big enough […] for a queen bed & dresser/desk - although ironically the closet was HUGE so storing away luggage is easy. Also being near Union Square made outside noise an issue; it got quieter after midnight but there was a lively sax player until then. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Our room had a heavy smell of 'old', very musty and stale. The room was tiny but it was clean. Location was good and the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking prices are ridiculous but that's to be expected in any big city. Not a bad hotel but I would opt to pay more next time for bigger beds and more space.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location and great hotel"
This hotel is a gem. We love the cosy welcoming atmosphere. All the staff especially the front desk staff were very professional, informative, friendly and helpful. The location is excellent and within walking distance to Chinatown and many great restaurants. There is all the shopping withing one could want at union square.. The cable cars are right […] outside the front door which makes it very convenient to not only experience riding the cars but also all cars take you to Fisherman's Wharf. The rooms are small but very cute and cleans. The hotel is a landmark and has been maintained beautifully. We highly recommend this hotel and will definitely be returning. "Great downtown location"
I will likely stay here again whenever I travel to San Francisco. It is located in the center of all the sights and sounds of Union Square. If you don't mind going to sleep to the sounds of Cable Cars passing by, you can't find a better value in downtown San Fran. The staff, the restaurant, the meeting room, the bed and room - all superior.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Perfect location, nice middle of the road hotel"
Room and bathroom were very clean, cookies and coffee were abundant in the lobby and the location could not be beat. The queen sized bed was extremely comfortable, I really need those pillows at home! The hallways are small and the hotel is a bit dated but we enjoyed our time there. Got to use the fitness facility around the block and had no complaints […] there. I would definitely pick this hotel again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Good for a business trip"
Had a great stay at the Chancellor. I was in a Powell street facing room. The room was smaller but clean and comfortable. The dresser space was limited with only 3 shallow drawers, but the closest had plenty of hanging space. The hotel is in great proximity to good restaurants and it's close enough to the convention center - within walking distance […] (about 7-10 minutes at a good clip). Bathroom was clean and water pressure was good too. There was even an umbrella in the closet which I did end up using on a rainy day. The room temp was a bit warm at first (even when the heater was switched to "cool" all the way), but the ceiling fan compensated nicely and I never felt uncomfortable. WiFi worked fine. I did not use TV or room service. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. All in all I would stay here again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Dated Hotel, Great Location"
Loved the location of the hotel. Property is a bit dated, but clean. Best part was the "Pillow Bar". I was able to order a buckwheat pillow and a 5ft body pillow for my stay, wonderful!Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location, Comfy beds"
The location of the hotel is great and Macy's is just a few minutes walk away. It is in the center of the shopping districts, however 1 thing I do not like is the carpark. There is no carpark at the hotel and we have to park like few blocks away from the hotel which is very inconvenient for us. The windows there are also not sound proof and we can hear […] all the noise from downstairs. On top of that, sirens of ambulance/ police cars can be heard a few times every night. One of the hotel staff who checked me in is not friendly and I do not like her service. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Nice stay for the money"
The rooms and bathroom were very small but the hotel was clean and accommodating. The location was excellent. Next to all shopping and eating. The restaurant in the hotel was also a great place for breakfast. Overall it was very pleasant.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Would stay again"
For the price this is one of the better hotels I have stayed at in San Francisco. The building is old but many of them are. My room was clean and staff were friendly. Its not as new looking as a Marriott but way less in price. I will stay here again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Right in the heart of everything we wanted to do!"
Had a great stay. Rory was a great host and very helpful. Clean rooms, helpful and polite staff. Hotel located right in the heart of downtown San Francisco.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great value at Union Square"
This small hotel near Union Square delivers. From the bellman who greets you to the coffee, tea, cookies and fruit which are there to refresh you as you enter the lobby, the Chancellor is a welcoming home away from home. The rooms are small, but our walk-in closet provided lots of space for all luggage; and the small refrigerator was a welcome bonus. […] Luques restaurant in the lobby is a well-priced, convenient place for breakfast and lunch; and there is a bar in the lobby for happy drinks at the end of a day of sightseeing. I have stayed at several hotels in the Union Square area, but the Chancellor is the winner in the moderate-price category. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
A lil loud, but cheap, friendly helpful staff and a great location. Everything you could want in a Hotel :)Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Decent for old, small property"
I was in town a couple days for business and was very encouraged by the staff of the hotel. They were fantastic in taking care of guests and always had excellent attitudes. Even the internal restaurant servers were great when I ate for breakfast each day. My room was clean and I didn't notice any hygenic issues anywhere in my room. The downsides were […] that during my stay, the elevators had continual issues which made for a lot of delays. I didn't mind taking the stairs to and from my room on the 10th floor except for when I had to carry some heavy stuff. The elevators are very small as well so it meant pretty significant delays in getting up and down. I should've read better when I booked the hotel because this one does not have any air conditioning. With only a ceiling fan and a window that opens 4 inches, I was right on the cusp on being uncomfortably warm and able to sleep. Ironically when you have the window open and are across the street from Union Square, you are subject to the panhandling trumpet player that plays "taps" for two hours from 9pm-11pm. Consider yourself warned. The one unique surprise about this hotel was their menu of custom pillows that you can order at no additional cost. This made sure you never have to wake up with a neck cramp or headache in the morning. Great treat! Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location, comfortable beds"
We had a great 3-night stay at the Chancellor Hotel. Our room was clean, had a fridge, a walk-in closet, and a nice view of Union Square. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel is close to several bus lines and the Powell Street Bart station, so getting around the city, and to-and-from the airport was very easy.Avis certifié Hotels.com

"great location; excellent value hotel"
First of all, the location of this hotel was excellent. It is right in the heart of Union Square and is close to various cable car and bus stops. It was extremely easy to get almost anywhere in San Francisco from this hotel. I didn't interact much with the hotel staff, but my interactions were generally very pleasant and the staff was friendly and helpful. […] With respect to the hotel itself, it is an older hotel and the rooms are a little bit on the smaller side, but everything was clean and kept up fairly well. The rooms were comfortable. Compared to the rates of other nearby hotels (and elsewhere in San Francisco), I thought this hotel was a great bargain. I would definitely stay here again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Great value for a very nice hotel downtown SF"
Excellent value for a comfortable clean hotel in the middle of downtown SF. Staff members are friendly and helpful. I'm picky about bed comfort and this was just right...with decent pillows, a rarity in hotels!Avis certifié Hotels.com
"very happy with the Chancellor! would stay again"
I was very happy with my 4-night stay at the Chancellor and will definitely consider staying there again in the future. My deluxe queen room was very comfortable and had everything I needed, including a small fridge, an iron and ironing board, a safe, a walk-in closet, and q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The hallways […] are nice, with thick carpets and a (quiet!) ice machine on every floor. The staff I interacted with were all very sweet and helpful, particularly the concierge, and the waiters in the restaurant off of the lobby, where I had breakfast the last morning of my stay. The lobby is very welcoming, with an endless supply of coffee, cookies, apples, and ice water 24 hrs / day. This was my first visit to SF and I'd read that the Union Square area is best avoided if possible on account of being noisy, but I wasn't bothered by the noise level during my stay. (Admittedly I'm a NYer and ordinary city traffic and street sounds don't bother me much). Light sleepers or those otherwise very sensitive to noise might benefit from requesting a room on one of the higher floors. I like that the hotel is within walking distance of the ferry building (the food there is wonderful!) and that public transport is close by on Market St. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Great hotel in great location"
This hotel is perfect for a few night stay in the city. The rates are very reasonable, the location is great with public transport easy to take (cable car is right out front, BART just down the street), the staff was helpful and friendly, and the room met our needs. Room was nothing fancy or over-the-top but clean and well kept. I would definitely stay […] here again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com

"Comfortable stay at decent price"
Our stay at the Chancellor was very comfortable. It is an excellent 3-star hotel. Staff is always very courteous and professional. Location can not be beat. The price is right! Would stay again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
A boutique hotel experience with an organized and professional staff. I was surprised by the degree of elegance and service I received during my stay here, especially considering the unbelievable rate! Something about this place felt like a little bit of New York in San Francisco, in a jazz kind of way. If I were to make a suggestion, I would want to […] upgrade the cookies. It's wonderful to have the cookies in the lobby, but if they were higher quality, they would be one more thing to rave about. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia

"Great location for union square"
We spent 5 nights at Chancellor Hotel. The hotel hotel is located in Union Square, great for shopping and restaurants. But there is no parking at the hotel, hotel parking is about 2-3 blocks away and about $29 plus tax! We found cheaper alternative parking. The room itself is tiny we were struggling with our bags and shopping! Overall it's not as charming […] as I imagined it to be. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Very Nice Hotel on Union Square!"
The hotel was very nice! It was comfortable, extremely clean, and the staff were all helpful, pleasant, and courteous. Yes the room may be a bit smaller than we were used to, but it was big enough, and the Chancellor has a lot of character! We will absolutely stay here again!Avis certifié Expedia

"Nice Comfortable Hotel in Excellent Location"
My wife and I booked the Chancellor for our SF trip for 4 nights and I couldn't be more pleased. The hotel is on Powell st. where the cable cars run, and a half block from Union Square. There are tons of shops and restaurants in the area, and you are at the hub of SFs many transit options. The rooms were small, but not cramped and had a very comfortable […] bed for a long day and night on the town. The staff were friendly and prompt in accommodating us with a new room when we had an issue with our neighbor and wanted to move from the floor we were on. I highly recommend this room, especially for the price. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Overall nice stay"
This is an older hotel so the rooms are tiny, but they were clean and it was very conveniently located. It is only a few blocks away from a BART stop so getting to/from SFO is easy. It is in the busy part of downtown so I wouldn't recommend having a car to have to park. The twin beds are small, but comfortable and they offer you many different kinds […] of pillows. The rooms also had all your basic amenities, a safe, and fridge. We were on the 10th floor and the wifi was slow. We requested an early check in and they already had a room ready when we arrived at 11am which was great. The staff was nice and they seemed like they did a decent job trying to maintain the place. Overall we had a good stay for a decent price. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Spent an evening at the Chancellor instead of driving home after our Christmas party. We chose the Chancellor because it is half a block from Union Square and was very conveniently located near the Curran Theater and the restaurant where our party was held. It's an small old hotel that is well kept up. The rooms were tiny but nicely done and clean. […] There can be long waits for the elevators, but it beats the stairs as they are treacherous! They don't have a restaurant, but Sears Fine Food is 2 doors down and have a great breakfast. Unfortunately, the day we were there the city was a zoo and the hotel couldn't offer valet parking that we were planning to use. We ended up being over an hour late in meeting friends trying to get to the parking garage. The traffic wasn't the hotel's fault, but take it as a warning to give yourself plenty of time when heading to SF during the holidays. Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a nice weekend in SF.
