I was so pleased with my stay at the Chancellor Hotel on Union Square. The location, accomodations, staff, and special touches were wonderful for such a reasonable rate. I would happily stay again while in town.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Great value and nice people."
Great value. Great location and well outfitted room.Avis authentique Hotels.com
This hotel was great for the price. Excellent location, very helpful and friendly staff and the rooms were nice and clean.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Nice hotel for short stay"
The hotel is at a central location and the room is small but clean. hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Hotel also provides free cookies, fruit, tee and coffee all day along in the lobby.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"A nice stay."
The service was good, as well as the speed.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Nice hotel, small rooms"
Great stay, good hotel. Be prepared for small rooms with small bathrooms. Though the rooms are very nice, the building itself is so narrow, it makes hallways, elevators, and stairways very small and somewhat uncomfortable.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Birthday in the city"
I loved this hotel. When we checked in they asked about our visit and my boyfriend explained it was my birthday and they offered us a bottle of champagne. They also told us the closest liquor stores ect. When we checked out the next day we were going to explore the area and they were able to hold our bags for the day as well. I love old buildings and […] this one still has vintage charm but the rooms have been updated so it feels classic. We will definitely be back, thank you for a beautiful visit! "I liked it"
The Chancellor is what I think of as a older European-style hotel--small rooms, small elevators, small stairway. But if you're okay with that, the rooms are clean, the betting was new, and the location and price were excellent. Off-site self parking was not expensive nor inconvenient either.Avis authentique Hotels.com
As a retired travel agent, I've had many clients that requested and stay many nights at the hotel. Price is good. Centrally located to all shopping, transportation, easy access to many attractions. It is a hotel of total convenience. I got a room with 2 twin beds for my son and I, I know room sizes are small in San Francisco and I expected that, it […] was facing Powell Street. Great view but didn't expect the sounds of the city being that loud. After the first night it was ok(got used to it). The staff was very helpful...with information, suggestions to shopping and restaurant's. Now I know why clients wanted to stay often. I would stay there again. "Clean and Central"
Rooms are small but very clean, location is very central. Greatly recommended if you are looking for non-expensive, clean and friendly spot in SF!!!Avis authentique Hotels.com
It has great charm and a great kitchen. Staff are very friendly.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"This is a gem!"
A quick Valentine getaway. Very comfortable room ideally located right at Union Square and an excellent value. We also enjoyed breakfast at the on-site restaurant. We will be back for sure.Avis authentique Hotels.com
Outside of the parking being 3-4 blocks away & parking rates the whole experience was great . I would stay again .Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Cozy comfort in the midst if the city"
Cozy comfort in Union Square area. Bathroom was small but a deep tub along with a rubber duck and bath salts welcomed me in for a long hot soak. Perfect way to unwind before hitting the city in the evening. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful with baggage, valet and room service. I would stay here again.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"An Average Stay"
Our stay at the Chancellor wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst. It was perfectly fine for one night, our first night in the city. The room was small, but we didn't have a lot of baggage and weren't staying for long anyway, so it wasn't a problem. Everything was pretty comfortable, and averagely clean. I was mildly annoyed that our television didn't […] work, but it was so late by the time we got in that it wasn't even worth complaining about. We didn't get to explore too much of the area, but I know we were just steps from a few different bars and restaurants, and a huge shopping area. I might not come again for a luxury hotel on a wonderful vacation, but for one simple night, I wouldn't have a problem staying again. Lisez la suiteAvis authentique Hotels.com
"Perfect hotel for Union Square"
We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Check in was simple and efficient. The valet process was easy with an average wait time of 10 minutes. The hotel was located just off Union Square so it was convenient to eateries, shopping and the theaters. We were near the cable cars, the BART system and the buses so transportation within the city was easy […] to take. Since this was an older hotel, I did not expect much but the room was very comfortable. The bed was extremely luxurious with the padding, the furnishings were adequate and the walk-in closet was cute! The bathroom may seem on the small side but it worked for my Mom and I. The towels were nice and the toiletries were lovely. Some reviews complained about outside noise and thin walls but we did not experience any of these. We were given the top floor so this may have contributed to our sound sleep. We stayed here in January and the lack of air conditioning was not a problem for us. It was cool enough to snuggle under the comforters. There is a ceiling fan for air circulation. Overall I would highly recommend staying here if you want to enjoy the City. "Sunny San Francisco in January 2015"
My sister and I stayed for 3 nights in January 2015. The location was great, an easy walk from the Bart and from our friend's hotel which dictated our location. There are a ton of cabs and buses, and the cable car stop is super close. The mega shopping complex is also a few short blocks away. Los of great restaurants close by. My first impression was […] marred by the bell captain. The first one we met was very odd, but the guy the next night was good. The rest of the staff were gracious and helpful, even helping us change rooms when we requested. The hotel is old, some might say charming. The stairs are somewhat steep, but doable. The rooms also were a little humid with the windows closed during the day, and thankfully the weather was glorious, so we left them open. 70 degree weather at the end of January was an unexpected treat. One thing, we had a connecting room, and it sounded like the couple next door were in our room having a conversation. Thankfully one of the reviews had mentioned this, and our first stop was Walgreens down the road for ear plugs. We later found out the hotel also provided them. You'll definitely need them. The cable car is right outside, and runs until midnight. It's fantastic for the experience of riding it, but not so great when you are trying to sleep. We had breakfast downstairs once; average and reasonably priced. Overall, great hotel, great location, right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of union square. I would recommend the hotel. "Great location and quiet"
great location, clean rooms and well insulated so not noisyAvis authentique Hotels.com
"Nice stay at the Chancellor"
convenient location, very close BART station and other public transport. Good size room, clean and comfortable. The only down side is that tea and coffee are only available down stair in the lobby rather than in the room.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Ok for a night"
Noisy. Older place. Price was right. Decent valueAvis authentique Hotels.com
"Perfect hotel for vacationers"
This was our second stay at the Chancellor, even better than the first. The location is the best in town for vacationers, steps to great restaurants and shopping and cable cars direct to Fisherman's Wharf. All other public transportation is very close too and will take you anywhere - get a Muni pass ($35 for 7 days) and skip the car. Hotel staff is […] very friendly and accomodating, rooms are beautiful, beds/bedding luxurious, room service delicious. Union Square is generally safe; this is the city so keep your eyes open and your wits about you and you'll be fine. There are a million things to do in SF and the Chancellor is a perfect base for all of them. Lisez la suiteAvis authentique Hotels.com
"Locally owned hotel"
The hotel is quite quaint. It is definitely old school and the rooms are a bit small. However they are very comfortable and very clean. The staff can't be beat. The location is spectacular.Avis authentique Expedia
"One night in the city for a concert and shopping"
The rooms are small, but it's the city. Location is great, right across the street from Saks - if you like to shop. Staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the sheets were oddly stained. The breakfat in the hotel restaurant was excellent.Avis authentique Hotels.com
Excellent location as it is two buildings up from Union Square.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Comfortable room with a great location."
Small but cozy room with a very comfortable bed. The hotel is well situated and staff was friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate to say at the Chancellor Hotel again.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Vintage Union Square hotel."
The Chancellor is a 100 year old hotel on Union Square, across the street from Saks Fifth Avenue. It is centrally located, and most of San Francisco is within walking distance. Countless restaurants and shopping opportunities are within a five minute walk. The hotel has an on site bar and restaurant. The front desk staff were fantastic: very cheerful […] and eager to please. The concierge was very helpful assisting us with a shuttle to and from the airport, as well as directions to restaurants and other sites. Being that the building is old, the lobby and rooms have a great deal of charm and character. This is not a boxy cookie cutters style hotel. The only drawbacks are that the rooms are small, which is not surprising given the age of the hotel, and that a great deal of street noise will reach your room, even as high as the seventh floor. The beds were quite comfortable, although the noise made sleeping difficult. Lisez la suiteAvis authentique Expedia
"Good value and great location"
Very good value for the money and perfect location as base to visit San Francisco. Staff friendly. Only downside was the room got a little hot. I would definitely recommend it.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Little gem in the heart of SF"
Everyone behind the front desk was so friendly! You can't beat the location and there are many delicious restaurants in walking distance. The room was very clean and cozy and I loved the pillow menu! I am so happy I found this little gem and I would 100 percent stay here again. Only con I can think of is it takes about 20 minutes to get your car from […] valet so order it from your room before you check out :) oh and the coupons for 2 for 1 drinks from the bar was amazing and the cherry on top of our stay! "Our stay at the Chancellor per your recommendation"
Our stay was great in that it was right around the corner from our Luncheon. We didn't know it would cost EXTRA for the parking; that should have been part of the advertisement; for the same price we could have stayed at another location where the parking was FREE. The room was nice but the street noise was continuous all night; emergency vehicles and […] there must have been a night club close by with a not so good singer. What was good; they allowed us to STORE our luggage, through our luncheon, and until we could retrieve our vehicle from the parking garage, to return and load our luggage. The location offered plenty of eateries nearby for a variety of foods. I forgot to check the receipt they gave me when I checked out after retrieving our luggage; it only listed the parking, not the room. Therefore I won't know if they charged me for anything more than the room, until I receive my bank statement. Lisez la suiteAvis authentique Expedia
"Fix the room temperature!"
This is a lovely old hotel with a great location right by Union Square. Rooms small but nicely decorated and quite clean; staff gracious and competent. There was only one negative aspect but unfortunately it was a big one: The room was unbearably warm for sleeping (we visited in January, so we assume there was central heating in effect), and there are […] no in-room temperature controls. There was an overhead fan with two speeds, which we tried to use, but unfortunately the speeds were (1) very fast and (2) even faster, so it was like trying to sleep in a wind tunnel -- very unpleasant. The other option was to open the window, which thankfully did open six inches or so. We took that option, but the street was quite noisy below, even though we were on the eighth floor, and although we jammed our earplugs in as far as we could, we essentially passed a sleepless night. We visit San Francisco often, and would love to return to this hotel, but until they figure out a way to deal with the overheated rooms, I don't think we would do so. "Convenient, Great Deal"
I stayed here because there was a great deal with Expedia and it was close to my job interview site. There was not a line when I checked in, my room was clean, comfy and had all the basics. When i checked out early the next morning the staff were very helpful. The building is older, but they've done a good job making it comfortable in such a great location. We enjoyed our stay so much we tried to stay a second night. But unfortunately no availability. If and when I find myself in SF again I will definetly stay at the Chancellor. The staff could not have been more accommodating. Thank you.SAvis authentique Hotels.com

"San Francisco gem"
Cool old hotel in great condition and friendly helpful staffAvis authentique Hotels.com
Very attentive and thoughtful staff. I went there for my anniversary and they surprised us with a lovely note with sweets & wine in the room. The room was a bit stuffy with the windows closed, so we had to leave the windows open. Very convenient to travel to bart, cable car and various muni stops.Avis authentique Hotels.com
"Great Location ... Great Price ... Great Weekend!"
What a great weekend in an hotel that is a lot older than me, and I'm a proud senior citizen. I felt safe and comfortable. I took the train into the city from my hometown. It was great not to have to deal with the stress of driving or overnight parking. Everything I had planned was in walking distance from the hotel; shopping, dining and theater. The […] hotel service I received was excellent; I had an end room which was small (king bed, clean and comfortable), the right size for a short visit. The front desk service was welcoming; and the concierge rep was new, and extremely knowledgeable. I hope the Chancellor continues to work to be the best, because its in the best location. "Nice Hotel with not too expensive price"
Room is very clean. And it just one block from Union Square.Avis authentique Hotels.com
I worked for 12 years at a 5 diamond Relais & Chateaux, I was very impressed by the property, service and hospitality at the price point. I spent the next night at a different hotel a block away that was more expensive ( friend had a hotel booked and just arrived), it was not up to par.Avis authentique Expedia
