"Good for the price"
Pros: -easy to take Public transit to the hotel (BART to Powell St) -lots of shopping destinations nearby -walking distance to ferry building -rooms are good quality for the price. Cons: very busy tourist street -loud street cars going by all day (they provide you with earplugs for a reason -homeless people are aggressive in this neighborhood -no air […] conditioning so you must keep the windows open Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
This hotel is in a great location near lots of shops and restaurants. The rooms are well maintained and on the smaller size, but the space is used well. The staff are very friendly, there is free tea, coffee, apples and cookies in the lobby which is a nice touch. The wifi is free and reliable. We had breakfast in the restaurant one morning and it was […] really nice. We requested a room on a high floor, and were given the top floor at the front of the hotel. It was quiet with the windows closed and atmospheric with them open as you can hear the trams and people playing instruments. My only negative is the room got quite hot at night and there was no individual temperature control for the room. We just made sure we left the windows open in the evening and closed them before going to bed. Some of the rooms don't have windows so I would definitely request a room with windows. A high floor is quieter. There is a travel desk to help you with bookings. I would definitely stay there again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Would Stay Here Again!"
Great stay and comfortable, clean rooms. Plenty of places to eat and shop around this area!Avis certifié Hotels.com
Great place to stay. Walking distance to shopping, restaurants, museums and the Ferry Building. Easy access to BART, the Muni and of course the famed cable cars.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"A great place to stay in the heart of the City."
Loved it. The staff was great. The restaurant served an excellent breakfast. The room was comfortable and clean. Access to shopping , touring and theater is close and easy. We would go back anytime.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Location location location"
Great location on Powell street just steps away from union square. Free wifi in room was added bonus, rooms were clean and surprisingly spacious for a city hotel. Would definitely recommend and stay again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Friendly staff, clean rooms, comfy beds, but no AC"
The only down to this hotel is that the rooms have no air conditioning which means you have to keep the windows open and it can be very noisy outside. Other than that it was a nice place and the staff was very friendly. There was a card in my room with a range of pillows I could request which was cool. The default pillows that were on the bed were fine […] for me. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Couldn't have asked for a better staff, but really needed to have AC in the rooms. It was not hot outside and it was very comfortable with the windows open. However, was unable to sleep due to all the noise and traffic outside. Couch and carpet needs to be replaced.Avis certifié Hotels.com
Great hotel for our last 2 nights in San Francisco. The hotel really made us feel very welcome and paid attention to detail. We were on honeymoon and they had a lovely surprise for us in our room. Their restaurant serves up nice food and the staff were delightful. Would definitely stay here again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
The Chancellor is perfectly located for business and leisure visits. Take advantage of the pillow menu. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but the staff provides ear plugs to help block noise from open windows. One example of the nice touches at this family-owned historic hotel.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location off Union Square"
The location for this hotel was perfect. Lots to do nearby and easy access to the cable cars and trolley. Many stores and restaurants in Union Square. The hotel would have got a higher rating but for a few things: 1) The first room we were in had a terrible mattress that was old and worn out. After one night both our backs were hurting and we were […] given a new and larger room with a better, pillowtop mattress. I wonder if we were given a cheaper room since we booked with Hotels.com . . . 2) Not a fault of the hotel but a downside of the location: room we had was on the 13th floor but faced Union Square. It was noisy. A subway station is being built close by and pilings were being driven from 6am - 11pm. Cable car bells, fire sirens, cab horns, car alarms and other clatter was ever present. The windows are mostly soundproof but without air conditioning either the window had to be kept cracked or the room was hot. This is an old hotel with small rooms but a room is only useful for using the bed and getting ready anyway. The bathrooms have older fixtures that are in good shape - the old bath tub has a high wall and would be hard for older folks to step over, possibly. Overall I liked the character of an older hotel, the architecture of the building certainly is nice. We just used the hotel for getting ready and sleeping. The service was good, no complaints there. Can't comment on the bar/restaurant or other amenities. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Hotel was fine with a very friendly staff, some people might mind that it might be out dated and rooms are small compared to other hotels, but how long are you really ever in your room? Overall is was very satisfied with this hotel.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Just what I was looking for..."
I wanted Union Square and a good deal at a nice place. This worked exceptionally well. Would do it again easily. The staff was superior. The room was great. The feel was authentic. If you are a chrome and glass and black shirt person this is not your gig. But if you want real just come here... you will be very satisfied.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Good hotel next to union square"
A good hotel close to Union square. No complaints after spending 7 nights here for a conference nearby.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location, no water pressure"
If you want to stay in Union square this is a very reasonable and convenient hotel. My only issue with the hotel was the persistent lack of water pressure which could not be fixed.Avis certifié Hotels.com
We stayed at the Chancellor for 3 nights and it was a great value for money hotel plus located in the centre of malls, restaurants and bars! The older style of the hotel was charming even though the shower was over a bath, which is annoying to me. The service was great and I'd definitely stay there again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Excellent location at a great price!"
If you are not fussy about having a modern updated room, this hotel is clean and comfortable. Our room faces Powell and we got some ear plugs on the nightstand. We did not need them once we closed the windows. We could hear the buskers playing sax, guitar or violin and it was actually pretty awesome!Avis certifié Expedia
"Very central hotel close to Union Square"
Check in was smooth and the receptionist was very pleasant. Our room on the second floor overlooked Powell St. but we were not disturbed at all by noise. The hotel makes it clear that the bedrooms are not large, but ours had a little "dressing room" which contained a good size safe, big enough for a laptop, ipad and more than one camera. There were […] also two luggage racks in this little room for our suitcases. The bathroom was small but very clean, although a little tired. The hotel is situated close to Union Square, and is conveniently only five minutes walk from the cable car turn round at Powell/Market Streets, and the BART Station, so it was easy to get to Fishermans Wharf etc. The hotel staff we encountered were all very pleasant and helpful, from the receptionist to the waitress at breakfast, who remembered us each day, and the gentleman on the tour desk who organised our shuttle to the airport on our final day. I should also mention that flavoured iced water, coffee, tea and cookies were available all day in the lobby and were very welcome. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"Great location, friendly staff"
We only stayed two nights but could not have been happier with all aspects of the Hotel. The room was comfortable and for two people plenty of room. The staff were friendly and efficient. The location was superb. And breakfast was delicious.Avis certifié Expedia
Perfect to be so close to everything at Union Square, although I imagine if you have a room facing Powell the tram could make it a bit noisy. Staff very friendly and the complimentary coffee, cookies, apples and ice water in the lobby are a nice touch. Room service ends very early but plenty of places nearby to get something to take out and bring back […] to the room. Love the bedding. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Good location, air conditioning issues"
we stayed at the Chancellor hotel in May - weather was warm (for kiwis) however no air conditioning in our room and rooms were tiny - no space to moveAvis certifié Expedia
"Great location, genuine staff"
Fantastic location right next to Union Square. Staff were all very helpful. The hotel even has someone who specialises in helping with all of your travel questions. It was refreshing to stay at a hotel where the staff were seemingly not completely driven by tips. All staff (reception, bar, tour desk) were genuinely helpful. There is no air conditioning […] but during summer months the large fan should do the trick. The room was not overly large, but certainly clean and comfortable. There are free cookies (always stocked) and apples at reception, as well as free tea and coffee. Very, very happy we chose the Chancellor! Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"Center of town"
The hotel was located right across from the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, directly in the center of town. It was accessible for every tour trip we wanted. Restaurants were within near walking distance, as was Chinatown. Good shopping was nearby. The restaurant next to the lobby was good and the service great. It was a pleasant and very enjoyable experie […] nce. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
The hotel was very convenient for getting around SF. The room was OK but 'tired' looking and the bathroom especially, could do with a makeover. There are only two lifts and these seemed to break down from time to time so it was sometimes necessary to wait longer than should be required. A very good breakfast was offered in the restaurant, with good […] service. The staff on the desk in the lobby were particularly knowledgeable and helpful, advising on the best way to get to AT&T Park for the MLB match etc.. Would certainly stay there again. This hotel is very convenient to shopping and many nice restaurants. Also, it is right across the street from the cable car pickup/dropoff. As it was within walking distance of AT&T Park, we had an enjoyable walk to and from the park.Avis certifié Expedia

"Century old hotel sitting in a wonderful location"
Location-wise, it's perfect! Just at the corner of Union Square. As it's already a century old (open in 1914), one can expect and understand the facilities it can provide. Condition of hotel is pretty good from that sense. Staffs are very helpful and friendly. Complementary coffee is provided to enlight your day!Avis certifié Expedia
"Wonderful location and great hotel"
This hotel was a great start to our trip, the rooms were fairly small but it was an old hotel so that's expected, the price was great and the location was fabulous, we were able to walk to our hop on/hop off tour bus and pretty could get anywhere without the use of a car.Avis certifié Expedia

"Great central location"
Nice neighborhood. Lots of great food nearby. Close to Union Square and other mass transit. No air conditioning, but you don't need it in San Francisco. Having a window I could open for fresh air was nice. The hotel is 100 hundred years old, but it has been maintained and updated well, The staff were excellent and very helpful, especially the friendly […] and knowledgeable bartender. I would definitely stay there again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"noisy, but nice"
I loved everything about this hotel. It had friendly and helpful staff, the hotel was in a great location where you could catch the trolley across the street, the room was small but well decorated and the price was great. The only problem was the crazy loud street noise. It was as if the windows were open all night. I heard the trolley dinging, people […] singing and all kinds of traffic. Overall I likedit, but iI wouldn't stay there again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com

Stay was great. Bed wasn't as comfy as it looked. Step into bathroom was odd at times. Wish there was A/C in the rooms. Overall I would probably stay at this hotel for the right price again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
The Chancellor was a very pleasant hotel. It was close to awesome eateries, union square and china town.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Nice hotel at union square"
We booked this hotel based on good rating on the web and it deserved all the great reviews. This is our first trip to San Francisco and it was a great experience. The hotel is closed to everything and right on the cable car route. We enjoyed both walking and the riding. The public transit system is very convenient - a 3 day pass is a good choice to […] tour the city! The Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is next door which is an add on for the ladies! "It was just right."
Convenient location for shopping downtown and easy to catch cable car and buses. Room is small but just right, comfortable, classy, clean. Quiet with the sound of jazz trumpet/sax from Union Square. Free rubber ducky!Avis certifié Expedia
Hair in the refrigerator on check in was a downer. The failure of the lady at the front desk to report my non-working safe to maintenance when I called in the evening of May 19, 2014 was another downer. Also, the bellman's contacting a limo instead of the taxi on check out was not to my specifications. Other than that, housekeeping was very good and […] the maintenance man was genuinely sorry for the front desk's failure when he came after I called the second time. Rooms need updating. Sink was cracked. Landing outside window was disgusting - cigarette butts and beer bottle tops everywhere. I could easily hear the person in the next room. But it is convenient to Union Square and the cable car, plus many fabulous restaurants and shopping...Avis certifié Hotels.com

This is a wonderful hotel in an excellent area. You are within walking distance to fabulous shopping and restaurants. Public transportation is very convenient. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was small but very clean and the bed was comfortable. They always have cookies, fruit and coffee in the lobby. "Fantastic Location in SF"
I recently stayed at the Chancellor Hotel and the location was the best. "Great location at reasonable price"
Centrally located by Union Square and short walk to cable car and rail link to airport. Fine old building but with all amenities.
