Couldn't have asked for a better staff, but really needed to have AC in the rooms. It was not hot outside and it was very comfortable with the windows open. However, was unable to sleep due to all the noise and traffic outside. Couch and carpet needs to be replaced.Avis certifié Hotels.com
Great hotel for our last 2 nights in San Francisco. The hotel really made us feel very welcome and paid attention to detail. We were on honeymoon and they had a lovely surprise for us in our room. Their restaurant serves up nice food and the staff were delightful. Would definitely stay here again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
The Chancellor is perfectly located for business and leisure visits. Take advantage of the pillow menu. Rooms are not air-conditioned, but the staff provides ear plugs to help block noise from open windows. One example of the nice touches at this family-owned historic hotel.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location off Union Square"
The location for this hotel was perfect. Lots to do nearby and easy access to the cable cars and trolley. Many stores and restaurants in Union Square. The hotel would have got a higher rating but for a few things: 1) The first room we were in had a terrible mattress that was old and worn out. After one night both our backs were hurting and we were […] given a new and larger room with a better, pillowtop mattress. I wonder if we were given a cheaper room since we booked with Hotels.com . . . 2) Not a fault of the hotel but a downside of the location: room we had was on the 13th floor but faced Union Square. It was noisy. A subway station is being built close by and pilings were being driven from 6am - 11pm. Cable car bells, fire sirens, cab horns, car alarms and other clatter was ever present. The windows are mostly soundproof but without air conditioning either the window had to be kept cracked or the room was hot. This is an old hotel with small rooms but a room is only useful for using the bed and getting ready anyway. The bathrooms have older fixtures that are in good shape - the old bath tub has a high wall and would be hard for older folks to step over, possibly. Overall I liked the character of an older hotel, the architecture of the building certainly is nice. We just used the hotel for getting ready and sleeping. The service was good, no complaints there. Can't comment on the bar/restaurant or other amenities. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Hotel was fine with a very friendly staff, some people might mind that it might be out dated and rooms are small compared to other hotels, but how long are you really ever in your room? Overall is was very satisfied with this hotel.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Just what I was looking for..."
I wanted Union Square and a good deal at a nice place. This worked exceptionally well. Would do it again easily. The staff was superior. The room was great. The feel was authentic. If you are a chrome and glass and black shirt person this is not your gig. But if you want real just come here... you will be very satisfied.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Good hotel next to union square"
A good hotel close to Union square. No complaints after spending 7 nights here for a conference nearby.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great location, no water pressure"
If you want to stay in Union square this is a very reasonable and convenient hotel. My only issue with the hotel was the persistent lack of water pressure which could not be fixed.Avis certifié Hotels.com
We stayed at the Chancellor for 3 nights and it was a great value for money hotel plus located in the centre of malls, restaurants and bars! The older style of the hotel was charming even though the shower was over a bath, which is annoying to me. The service was great and I'd definitely stay there again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
Perfect to be so close to everything at Union Square, although I imagine if you have a room facing Powell the tram could make it a bit noisy. Staff very friendly and the complimentary coffee, cookies, apples and ice water in the lobby are a nice touch. Room service ends very early but plenty of places nearby to get something to take out and bring back […] to the room. Love the bedding. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
The hotel was very convenient for getting around SF. The room was OK but 'tired' looking and the bathroom especially, could do with a makeover. There are only two lifts and these seemed to break down from time to time so it was sometimes necessary to wait longer than should be required. A very good breakfast was offered in the restaurant, with good […] service. The staff on the desk in the lobby were particularly knowledgeable and helpful, advising on the best way to get to AT&T Park for the MLB match etc.. Would certainly stay there again. "Great central location"
Nice neighborhood. Lots of great food nearby. Close to Union Square and other mass transit. No air conditioning, but you don't need it in San Francisco. Having a window I could open for fresh air was nice. The hotel is 100 hundred years old, but it has been maintained and updated well, The staff were excellent and very helpful, especially the friendly […] and knowledgeable bartender. I would definitely stay there again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"noisy, but nice"
I loved everything about this hotel. It had friendly and helpful staff, the hotel was in a great location where you could catch the trolley across the street, the room was small but well decorated and the price was great. The only problem was the crazy loud street noise. It was as if the windows were open all night. I heard the trolley dinging, people […] singing and all kinds of traffic. Overall I likedit, but iI wouldn't stay there again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Close to neighboring restaurants"
Stay was great. Bed wasn't as comfy as it looked. Step into bathroom was odd at times. Wish there was A/C in the rooms. Overall I would probably stay at this hotel for the right price again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
The Chancellor was a very pleasant hotel. It was close to awesome eateries, union square and china town.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Nice hotel at union square"
We booked this hotel based on good rating on the web and it deserved all the great reviews. This is our first trip to San Francisco and it was a great experience. The hotel is closed to everything and right on the cable car route. We enjoyed both walking and the riding. The public transit system is very convenient - a 3 day pass is a good choice to […] tour the city! The Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is next door which is an add on for the ladies! "It was just right."
Convenient location for shopping downtown and easy to catch cable car and buses. Room is small but just right, comfortable, classy, clean. Quiet with the sound of jazz trumpet/sax from Union Square. Free rubber ducky!Avis certifié Expedia
Hair in the refrigerator on check in was a downer. The failure of the lady at the front desk to report my non-working safe to maintenance when I called in the evening of May 19, 2014 was another downer. Also, the bellman's contacting a limo instead of the taxi on check out was not to my specifications. Other than that, housekeeping was very good and […] the maintenance man was genuinely sorry for the front desk's failure when he came after I called the second time. Rooms need updating. Sink was cracked. Landing outside window was disgusting - cigarette butts and beer bottle tops everywhere. I could easily hear the person in the next room. But it is convenient to Union Square and the cable car, plus many fabulous restaurants and shopping...Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great hotel close to Union Square."
This is a wonderful hotel in an excellent area. You are within walking distance to fabulous shopping and restaurants. Public transportation is very convenient. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was small but very clean and the bed was comfortable. They always have cookies, fruit and coffee in the lobby. They do not provide a free breakfast […] but they have a restaurant that had good omelets. If I am fortunate enough to get to San Francisco again, I wouldn't stay anywhere else!! Thanks so much!! Nice to be in the middle of town however if you're looking for more space in your stay the rooms might be a little tiny to accomodate.Avis certifié Expedia

"Fantastic Location in SF"
I recently stayed at the Chancellor Hotel and the location was the best. My girlfriend and I had plans to do a multitude of different things at different locations around the city and the Chancellor proved to be a great choice. "Nice hotel next to Union Square"
Pleasant, clean, easy ingress/egress with valet parking, easy access to everything Union Square has to offer. A nice perk is the "pillow Menu" where they offer you different/supplemental pillows and cases to help you enjoy your bed even more!Avis certifié Expedia

"Great location at reasonable price"
Centrally located by Union Square and short walk to cable car and rail link to airport. Fine old building but with all amenities. Appreciated the fact that the windows actually open for ventilation rather than relying on air con. Helpful staff. Didn't try the hotel bar or restaurant.Avis certifié Expedia

All points of interest are very accessible from this location. The old cable car runs right in front of the hotel, we walked to China Town, the beautiful City Hall, symphony and ballet halls. Shopping and so many restaurants we couldn't count.Avis certifié Expedia
"Location, Location, Location!"
The hotel has a perfect location at Union Square- the staff are super friendly. We loved the convenience of being right in Union Square and the European feel of the hotel. The staff was very helpful and friendly. "Good place to stay if don't want to spend alot"
The good news. It's convenient to trolley, market st, streetcars. Not expensive. Excellent tasting free coffee available 24 hours in lobby. Room had great beds and very comfortable pillows and comfortables. Bad news - no free shuttle from airport, room had a musty smell and advised to leave bathroom window open when showering.Avis certifié Expedia
Location was fantastic! Needs some updating. Didn't use hotel, except to sleep in.Avis certifié Hotels.com
My family and I really enjoyed our stay at Chancellor hotel in union square. Very close to shops and restaurants. The rooms are really clean and smelled nice and fresh. Prior to our stay in chancellor, we we're at another mainstream hotel close by and our room had this old/moldy smell. Chancellor hotel also offers a pillow menu, which I thought was […] neat. They also have a small fridge in the room, which came in handy for storing baby food that were perishable. The free wifi was a plus! All in all, we loved our stay in this hotel and will stay here again for sure. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"We will stay here again!"
Excellent location--we did not have a car and had no trouble getting wherever we wanted to go. Great restaurants within steps of the hotel as well. The room was actually larger than anticipated--just the right size! Service was excellent--will definitely make this our go-to downtown SF hotel.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Chancellor Hotel review"
We've stayed at the Chancellor for many years and loved it's Small Boutique Hotel feel and great price with a fantastic location but as the price has continued to go up and there is only so many reasons to stay in a small room. They do the very best they can with the space and it is a very classy hotel with great people working there but I doubt if […] we will stay again just because the price verses space doesn't equal out anymore. "Our favorite hotel from our whole trip!"
We stayed one night in the Chancellor on a road trip up the west coast. It was by far the best hotel we stayed at the entire trip. The location was great, the staff was very helpful and friendly, the room was quaint and comfortable, and the extra amenities were fantastic! I loved that they have a list of several different pillows you can use, including […] a memory foam and one that reduces snoring! I will absolutely stay here when I come back to San Francisco! "Great location, wonderful staff"
One of the hotel's great assets is its location really close to Union Square with cable cars running past the front door. The other is the staff, who are friendly and helpful. We had an issue with noise coming from the room next door which was dealt with quickly and effectively - a tv turned up really loud while the guest was in the bathroom! Our room […] was rather dark and though we had no street noise there were occasional grumbles from the plumbing - but the plus points of the hotel more than made up for that. Breakfast was good value and the service there was great as well. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"Fantastic hotel in the heart of Union Square!!"
Just returned from a 4 night stay at The Chancellor Hotel in San Francisco!!! we decided to stay at The Chancellor Hotel in the absolute heart of Union Square!! The location could not have been better if you like to shop. The stores down Powell St.were fantastic and there were many restaurants to choose from. We felt very safe and we were happy to be […] so close to everything . ChinaTown is also very close with lots of cute souvenirs to be had. The bus is close and the trolley cars run right down Powell St in front of the hotel which was very convenient and they were a blast and every tourist should try it at least once!! I have to send an extra special thank you to Annie who worked at the front desk at The Chancellor who was such a help to us and always recognised us when we arrived back from a trip out . Her customer service was appreciated as well as the other front desk staff who were helpful with directions and information as well as the excellent service and staff at Luques restaurant in the hotel!! There was 24hr coffee available with fresh cookies and fruit which was a nice touch. The room was cozy with 2 twin beds. the room was a bit small but we were there just to sleep and then be off for the day! Would stay at this great little hotel again! "Great hotel in an even better location"
An older hotel this place has lots of character with the rooms offering a very comfortable bed with a pillow menu to chose one to suit you perfectly. We stayed on the top floor with a wonderful view of union square and beyond. It was a little noisy with the bell from the cable car but what do you expect from a downtown hotel! With the top floor room […] we had a very large walk in closet which was perfect to put away our luggage. I loved the hotels charm and the staff were very helpful. As a bonus there are complementary cookies, tea, coffee, fruit and even popcorn in the lobby to help you stave off the hunger before you head for breakfast or dinner. From the hotel everything is within a good distance for example fishermans wharf is about a 45min walk and a cable car stop is right across the road. I highly recommend this hotel and it isn't too expensive! Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
Nice warm feeling older hotel. Great staff. Staff made you feel welcome to be here.Avis certifié Expedia
On first impression one would think this is quite a dated hotel, and certainly there are aspects that seem a bit old and worn. However, the service provided was outstanding, the beds comfortable (the pillow menu had that extra bit of class), and the rooms surprisingly quiet given we were overlooking Powell Street where the cable cars ring their bells […] constantly and bagpipe and trumpet playing buskers hang around Union Square! Apart from a shower curtain that tended to leak onto the floor, we would find it hard to fault anything with our stay. Would definitely stay here again. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Overall, a good experience"
Well centered, staff friendly and helpful. I stayed 4 nights after 10 days of travelling across the East coast. The rooms are not that big but I guess enough for a few nights. We were 2 and needed seperate beds and we were given single beds (they seemed small) with pillows too high for my comfort. Shower was fine but it is screwed to the wall and I […] had to bend over to get any water on my face/hair as I am 6ft1 (185cm). Location is great on Powell Street with transport to take you anywhere including famous cable car but If you stay on the street side of the hotel, I guess you will get the discomfort of having the loud cable car. We stayed on the back side of the hotel and we had the ventilation next to our windows (4th floor). Despite them being closed you could still hear it. Could be a problem for some. The hotel offered to put us in a higher floor. So hotel staff is nice ;) I would stay here again :) Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
