"Great Location, Comfy Beds!"
Overall, the hotel was great. We arrived on the 8AM flight, so our room wasn't ready yet (understandably so). We asked the front desk to hold our bags and to call us when the room was available. Unfortunately, we never received the call (found out our room was available when we arrived at the 3PM check-in time to see if we could get in yet). Not a big […] deal at all, though - just keep in mind that if you get in on an early flight be prepared to wait until 3PM to check in. Other than that, the location was great - close to everything! And the hotel rooms were clean and the beds were super comfortable. At night, if you sleep with the window open it might be a little loud (the hotel room came with a set of earplugs) but I'm a heavy sleeper and didn't really have any problem going to sleep. :) Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Wonderful SF Hotel"
Small but perfect for your San Francisco Stay. Excellent location, friendly staff and small but extremely comfortable room. This is my go to hotel!!!Avis certifié Hotels.com
got in late and out early, with little contact with the service but little need too. The room was excellent especially for the price in SF.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great value near Union Square"
We were pleasantly surprised by the Chancellor Hotel and its proximity to Union Square and theaters. Good value for a great location.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Low price for locaion"
Room was clean, decent water pressure, comfortable bed, tough to beat the price for location.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Right in the middle of everything. Great location"
The room was European in size with regards to it not being the biggest room in the world, but it was very clean and comfortable. The rate was amazing at $108 for the night and considering it is in Union Square it was amazingly close to what I wanted to do that day. Great find and would def stay again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
This hotel is 100 years old and there is no air conditioning. The days were warm at the start of our stay so the window had to be open. Street noise was present and could be a problem for some. Our room had a window in the bathroom so cross ventilation was present. The side of the tub/shower was high and this could be problem for some people. Overall […] we found this hotel to be enjoyable, clean and comfortable. The location was excellent. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Hot and noisy"
There is no air conditioning in the hotel. On hot summer nights, this is unacceptable. The solution is to offer a fan and open your windows. The only problem is I was on the second floor and the exhaust fan for the restaurant was outside my window so to open my window meant noise and hot air blowing into my room.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Great old hotel."
Excellent value for the price. Great location. We would definitely stay here again.Avis certifié Hotels.com
The hotel was pretty much as expected - old bathrooms could use updating. The room was large and the person at check-in made sure I got a quiet room in the back. No air conditioning - which is typical of older SF hotels - but with the open window, it was comfortable at night. For San Francisco, the price was reasonable and the staff was very pleasant […] - late check-out was no problem and no charge. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com

"2nd and last hotel in San Francisco"
This is the 2nd hotel we've stayed in in San Francisco, and we won't need to look for a 3rd.... the Chancellor is very well situated, smart and friendly.Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Clean, Good Value in Union Square"
I was very satisfied with my one night stay at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and check in check out formalities went quickly and hassle free. The room was well furnished, although the lack of air conditioning made it a bit uncomfortable for me at night. To be fair though, the weather was unusually hot for SF when I was there, so perhaps this […] wouldn't be a problem on a more typical evening. I thought the hotel was excellent value for money considering the location, right off Union Square. I would recommend this hotel for those traveling on a budget who wish to stay right in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
The hotel is just at Union square, the neighbourhood is nice and safe, good transport links. Our double room was a bit small but clean and with coffee and tea facilities. I requested 2 bed instead of a king size bed as the booking specifically said 2 single beds or a queen bed and we got a king bed, that was dissappionting but the rest was fine. The […] service is good. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Clean, boutique hotel conveniently located"
This hotel is a bit older, but is kept very clean and comfortable. Be prepared for the street noise, which you will hear because with no air conditioning, you'll need to open the window. They provide earplugs (a nice touch), and there is a ceiling fan. This hotel is right in the heart of Union Square, so if driving, look out for all the pedestrians […] (cause they aren't looking for you)! We decided to use the offsite parking (as opposed to valet) to save a few $$, but mistakenly parked in the garage at the corner of Sutter & Stockton instead of theirs about 100 ft further down the block. This mistake saved us some more money which when in SF, every little bit helps. Great location, close to everything. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com

"Oldie & and Goodie"
Excellent. The Chancellor is an old hotel - 100 years - this year, so there are some 'finer' points that may not be there for regular travelers... but who gives a whoot if the old door hinges are painted over or if the bathroom window doesn't quite close all the way... The hotel is great, as are the staff! If your room doesn't have something you think […] you need, a quick call can get someone to to find it for you. Each time we came into the lobby, from the first time when the airporter dropped us off, to the early morning entrance we made after an impromptu night on the town, the reception greeted us warmly with bright smiles. Staying at other hotels in recent weeks, we realize that kind of all-day treatment is not very common. We have also read about complaints of Chancellor rooms being too noisy?? Of course there's noise. YOU ARE DOWNTOWN in a big city. So sirens and construction, the ding-ding of the trolley cars, and the sounds of people calling out are going to abound. It's part of the life. The hotel is a big part of that downtown too. I would suggest, like our room, that you stay up a little higher ... but that said, we heard the downtown noise quite clearly from the 12th floor as well. We just enjoyed it. AWESOME. We will definitely be back and are ALREADY recommending the Chancellor to our friends. Oh, and comfy beds as well. We didn't try the restaurant, but the morning coffee and cookies was a nice kickstart. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
The only complaint about the hotel I would have is the lack of AC and the bathrooms. We found ourselves out on some warmer San Fran nights so the rather small room got warm and never cooked down. As for the bathrooms, I'm 6'2 and the shower head was just above my chin which made it difficult and awkward to shower. The toilet was slightly angled in the […] corner of the bathroom just inside the door which was also awkward. One other thing was the walls are thin. I could hear people in other rooms sneezing and just having normal conversations. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
No complaints. Good time. Nice hotel. Clean hotel. Location can not be beatAvis certifié Expedia
Good experience. Coffee & tea always available. Delicious cookies. Small room but everything there. Would stay there again.Avis certifié Expedia
"Central and comfortable"
The hotel suited our needs perfectly and seemed better than the rated 3star. Staff were friendly and obliging. Great to have a little bar downstairs and the breakfast menu was superb. We dined in all three mornings and on one of them we needed an early start for a Napa Valley Tour we arrived at 7:05 and had finished within 20min. Great seeing we needed […] to be at the ferry by just after 8. The rooms were beautifully furnished and the bed was fabulous which was just what we needed after sleeping on hard beds and pillows in Europe for a month. Tram outside was very handy. "Great location for first timers"
The hotel is located in Union Square, which is a hub of activity and great for tourists. If you've never been to San Fran, the tour buses are nearby, as well as the cable cars, so it's easy to find your way. The hotel also provided maps of the city, the staff were very courteous and sometimes they have even have cookies at the reception. It's got a […] lot of old world charm (it's 100 years old this year), but that also means narrow stairs and tiny elevators. The housekeeping staff should be tipped and they are appreciated. The hotel restaurant was also worth checking out. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"100 years old, perfect for today"
We stayed three nights at the Chancellor, which is kitty-corner to Union Square (nicely positioned to go anywhere in downtown San Francisco, and just four blocks from the BART station, which we used to get into town from the airport). The staff at the Chancellor were friendly and polite and helpful, and the building itself is great. The room was smaller […] than a more modern hotel, but not small. No air conditioning, which was an issue the first night, but given San Francisco weather, not a problem the other nights. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"Nice hotel. Great Location."
Nice staff. Walking distance to almost everything including AT&T Park. Bed was comfortable, shower was average, room was clean but small. Would stay again.Avis certifié Expedia
"Excellent hotel, highly recommended!"
Very pleasent stay at this hotel! Friendly staff with good service. Small room (to be expected) but clean and with a very comfortable bed. Unfortunately, we didn't have a room with a view (window on the middle staircase) but it was very quiet at night and didn't spend much time in the room anyway. Prime location right on Union Square, walking distance […] to everything (no need for a car and parking is very expensive apparently). Excellent hotel for the price, i highly recommend it! "Best locatation in SF!"
The hotel is certainly not cheap given the size of the rooms, but the location is great and other hotls in the area are out of sight expensive. This boutique hotel is a lovely old place with great staff in a terrific location!Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Central SF location, old compact hotel"
Very good service from the staff. The Chancellor is a 1914 era hotel, very compact rooms and hallways. No air-con, overhead fan only. Water pressure in shower is very weak. Rooms are compact. Be aware that if located on the front side of the hotel it will be very noisy from traffic and trams. If you are looking for location, this can't be beat.Avis certifié Expedia
Car was parked nearby on street and was broken into...Avis certifié Hotels.com
"Good hotel, fantastic location"
The Chancellor Hotel is a historic building with lots of character. The rooms are small, however, because of its location, we really didn't spend much time in our room except to sleep.Avis certifié Expedia
"A brief stop in San Francisco"
Chancellor Hotel on Union Square is a great place to stay. It is small, comfortable, central and affordable. If you are looking for a flash hotel then this isn't you. It is an older style building with classic San Francisco interior - classy and timeless. The rooms are small but sufficient. There is no air conditioning but you don't really need it. […] For us it was perfect for our short stay. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia

"4 star quality at 3 star price"
This is a great little hotel right next to Union Square. Rooms are small (it is San Francisco after all) but very comfortable. Tiny bathroom but able to fit a great deep bathtub. And they even provide bath salts for you. The staff was very friendly. What more could you want.Avis certifié Expedia

"Excellent, central location..."
The perfect place to stay for a central location with easy access to all San Fransisco has to offr, good, clean rooms and good quality bedding, towels. Only down side was lack of air conditioning in the room however windows open and fans available.Avis certifié Expedia
"close to downtown"
I really enjoyed my stay at the Chancellor Hotel, it was not exactly in the center of downtown, but you were only a block away from food, shopping and the Wharf. Small but cozy and clean! Service was good too, they had a tour ticket booth within the hotel and shuttle to/from the airport (for a fee of course) totally would recommend this hotel!!!Avis certifié Hotels.com
Great hotel - centrally located. It was the smallest room I have ever stayed in, thoughAvis certifié Hotels.com

"Great location and amenities, but no AC in rooms.."
This place was in a great location and had good amenities (bar, restaurant, tour desk) but the (smallish) room had no AC, so in the summer it was uncomfortably warm, and then with the windows open, exposed us to lots of night-time city noise (even with the provided earplugs) so was not a good night's sleep. In the fall/winter/spring this wouldn't matter […] as much, but I would not stay here again in the summer. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
Chancellor Hotel has a great location in Union Square. Easy access to the BART to get to the airport. Walking distance to most of the major attractions. Bed was comfortable and the staff was really friendly. Would highly recommend to a friend. Can't beat the location and service at this price point.Avis certifié Expedia
"Central location for nightlife"
Stayed here to go out downtown with some friends from who had never been to the US/California before. Didn't want a hotel that was dumpy and needed something centrally located with easy access to local bars and clubs, without breaking the bank. This hotel had a substantially lower price point than any others nearby and was also close to night life (Rube […] Skye, Infusion Lounge, The Irish Bank, etc.) so we went with it. Not a disappointing decision, but would NOT recommend staying for long periods of time as the rooms are small, bathrooms are very outdated (room furnishings are not) and there is no air conditioning. Had an amazing experience at the Chancellor. The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly, and our room was comfortable, quiet, and clean. We requested a room at the back higher up because it's quieter and that's what we got! Centrally located and close to public transit. Will return!Avis certifié Expedia

"Good for the price"
Pros: -easy to take Public transit to the hotel (BART to Powell St) -lots of shopping destinations nearby -walking distance to ferry building -rooms are good quality for the price. Cons: very busy tourist street -loud street cars going by all day (they provide you with earplugs for a reason -homeless people are aggressive in this neighborhood -no air […] conditioning so you must keep the windows open Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Hotels.com
"Great hotel, very well placed."
Loved this hotel. We had a great room (8th floor, quiet side).Bed comfy, enough space (not a lot, but enough), shower and bath, even a cubby room for suitcases and stuff. Great to have free wifi. Very well placed for transport and on Union Square. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks to all staff.Avis certifié Expedia

"Excellent location for central San Francisco"
Chancellor Hotel is situation only a short walk from Union Square, which made it ideal for us as we had booked hop on/off bus tours which departs from there. Staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Hotel was clean and room was very pleasant - our room had a small room for luggage/clothing which was very handy. Only niggle […] we had was the fan for bathroom would turn on randomly during night and this was a bit noisy. Lisez la suiteAvis certifié Expedia
"Central hotel by Union Square and the cable car."
The hotel was recommended by a friend who'd stayed there. The rooms are small by US standards though the facilities are very good, including an old fashioned umbrella hanging in the closet! There is no (apparent) air conditioning but the extremely quiet ceiling fan kept the room pleasantly cool and we didn't need to open the window at night (we visited […] in July). Ear plugs are provided but we didn't need them. The bed was very comfortable and there was a choice of pillows too. We only used the concierge once, to book the airport shuttle bus, but he was very helpful. The Chancellor has a small bar and also a breakfast/lunch room which closes around 2pm. There are plenty of eating choices close by so finding somewhere for dinner was not a problem, though we ate mainly at Pier 1 on the Embarcadero or at Fishermans Wharf. The hotel may not have all the bells and whistles of big, modern hotels but its very central position meant we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.
