We had a great time at the Royal Sands, our only negative would be that the furniture in the rooms was a bit dated. Its not in bad condition is just a bit old fashioned, but I think that is just the style they go for. The all inclusive was well worth having and the food in the various restaurant's was very good.Avis véridique Hotels.com

"Good experience"
Beach was great as were the pools, but no hot tub on premises. Food options were good and Captain's Cove was very good and accommodating. They do move you if not a time share; this can be disconcerting and differential treatment was observed at times. Overall a very good experience.Avis véridique Expedia
"Mixed impressions from Royal Sands"
The bad: - When we first arrived to check-in, we discovered that we got a room on the first floor in front of the pool. When we asked for a different room, the receptionist checked for options and chatted with his colleagues in Spanish, then told us that there were no other rooms available. Luckily my wife speaks fluent Spanish - it seems that he found […] better rooms but didn't want to tell us since he claimed that we "weren't nice". When we told him that we understood everything he was saying - he magically came up with a better room... - Since we stayed over the weekend we had to change rooms on Saturday. The change itself went smoothly but it was annoying to wait in the room in the middle of the day. - The hotel DOESN'T have a wired high speed Internet option, as opposed to the description. The good: - The resort itself is not bad, the rooms and public areas were clean, most of the employees where quite nice especially the waiters in the La Veranda (Alejandro was our favorite - very kind and friendly, well done!) - We tried the "Hacienda Sisal" restaurant and we both liked it. Lessons that we learned here: 1. If your vacation includes a weekend - don't go to a resort... or at least make sure you won't have to switch rooms in the middle of your stay. 2. One rude receptionist can really put a damper on your vacation... If you happen to deal with one during check-in, don't let him ruin your day - simply ask for someone else. "A great week!"
My husband and I were in Cancun from Feb. 1-8 and loved the hotel!!! We got a killer deal on Expedia that was all inclusive. The food was amazing both on the property itself and also at Captain's Cove which is off the property. At the hotel's main restaurant, they encouraged you to eat off the buffet but would get you the menu if requested. Most of […] the time we ate from the buffet because there were so many good choices...health and not so healthy but delicious. Drinks were also included and we were happy with the choices of labels. We arranged a trip to Isla Mujeres and to Chichen Itza through the Thomas Moore desk at the hotel. Both were amazing. The only disappointment was that there was a lot of wave action in front of the hotel. This was of course out of their control! There were life guards posted so that was reassuring. One more note about the food at Captain's Cove. Order the grilled Grouper! If was amazing. Sit next to the railing so you can see the salt water crocs that visit. Beautiful sunsets from there also. All in all...we love the beautiful resort, the wonderful food, and the very friendly and accommodating staff. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Good hotel with great sandy beach"
I'd recommend this hotel for patient people who will not stay on Saturday. It have great clean beach with fine white sand and awesome waives. Food is really delicious. WiFi is everywhere, even on the beach but it is very slow and acceptable only for basic web browsing (forget about youtube, gaming, and skype with video). The hotel is really great, but […] have at least two pretty illogical things which really irritated me. First is, of course, the Saturday rooms swaps. You have to pack all your luggage until 11am and wait inside your room for bellboy till 12am. Since 11 am your keys are locked, so you can only exit your room. Internet access is also locked since 11 am, even if you are going to stay one more week. Around noon you move to another room. In the SAME time you see that people from your new room are moving to another room too. So you have to wait until ~2 pm to have fresh bedding/towels/cleaning. Minibar will be changed around 4 pm and shampoos/gels will be changed around 5 pm. Nice, huh? The whole Saturday rest is ruined. Second thing is the access to all services. On check in you will get all inclusive bracelet (which scratches skin) and room keys. The room keys are smart and contains all information about you inside: room number, all inclusive status, everything. BUT on each service request you must show you bracelet, say LONG room number, your name, leave tips and sign receipt with total 0 USD because it's all inclusive. And you HAVE TO link credit card to your keys. The hotel is immaculate, the only negative thing is that we were on an all inclusive and most of the guests are members, so at times we felt just slightly inferior than the guests that come year after year.Avis véridique Expedia
"Overall great time"
This is our 5th return to the sands. We purchased our first all inclusive package to the sands due to no availablity with time share exchange.Same staff as the past 5 years. Knowing the same waiters, we tiped them daily(as they deserved, very hard working). We had great service the entire trip.Tipping up front, does help. When you book, they say tips are […] included, but not to our standards as to how hard they work. Grreat fun and activites for couples and families.Would not recommend to singles. Very, very clean from the pool, dinning areas to your room. ;( not so happy with the change of food options due to all inclusive package.Surcharges on some foods and drinks. The buffet and pool bar menu the same food all week for lunch.Could'nt order off lunch menu due to all inclusive unless you wanted to pay for more food you already paid for, During happy hour, not for us all inclusives. 30% off only on beer.If you don't like the 2 beers on tap, which my husband didn't you have to pay. "Nice get away"
The room was bright and airy. However they are not sound proof. Because of the way they are designed you hear when people walk up and down the hall ways. Room service took 45minutes each time and never had what was ordered. The rooms were not stocked with drinks, coffee or tea and we had to request for them. We did not receive information about hotel […] and had to seek out, food, beaches, and spa. All were nice when we found them. The spa is extra even for hot tub and sauna. "Way Better than Expected!"
We arrived at the hotel at 11:00 a.m. We were allowed to check in even though check in time is 4:00. The person checking us in told us we would be in one room for two nights and then be moved to another. I asked if the other room was available to start with so we didn't have to change rooms. Surprisingly, the room was available and there was no room […] switching. The all inclusive was fantastic! My husband and I especially liked the food at Con Quistador! The Veranda offered a very nice breakfast and lunch buffet as well. Captain's Cove had excellent seafood. Every employee that we came into contact with was friendly and helpful! "Great Hotel for a Family"
We stayed in a two bedroom suite with 2 adults and 4 children. The size of the suite was perfect with plenty of room for all of us. We enjoyed the swimming pool with the swim up bar and the lounge chairs along the pool and beach were very nice as well. The service was great and the wait staff was very polite and helpful. The hotel was very clean and […] well kept. "Perfect resort for first time vacation to Cancun!"
Great vacation resort. We purchased the all-inclusive package that was perfect. We were able to visit sister resorts at no additional fee. The shuttle took us directly to the sister resort we chose to visit. Hacienda Sisal had great food. The food at the Royal Sands and Spa pool side was great. Buffet was ok. They were slow to replenish food on the […] buffet. You had the option of having your food prepared at grill in the restaurant. Each night was a different theme. We opted to eat elsewhere during the "Oriental" night buffet. Thomas Moore, in-house excursion, travel agency were very helpful. They set up all of the excursions and tours for us. Employees were very courteous and the service was superb. Tips are greatly appreciated by the employees. They work very hard and are deserving of an extra american dollar. We will definitely stay at the Royal Sands and Day Spa on a return trip to Cancun. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Relaxing get-away"
The hotel/resort was beautiful and exceptionally well maintained. The staff was extremely professional and polite at all times in all areas. The grounds were beautiful as was the beach. The food was very good although repetitive for breakfast and lunch. Our only real complaint was the bedding. The Murphy twin beds were as hard as bricks. The king bed […] had a plastic mattress cover that was like one would use on a toddler's bed. The pillows were also poor quality. The wi-fi was troublesome in that you had to constantly log back in. "Love the Royal Sands!"
This was our fourth stay at the Royal Sands. The staff is wonderful, and the rooms are spacious. The pools and beach are fabulous. Lunch each day by the pool at the Char Hut was a highlight of the trip. The RS is located right next to the Kukulcan Mall, and you can easily jump on the bus to head downtown, to the market or La Isla Mall. The grocery store […] inside the hotel is very convenient, and we used the gym or tennis courts everyday. Our teenagers had a great time! The weather in Cancun is pretty much a slam dunk. It rained twice while we were there, each time for less than 20 minutes. I wish the RS was not going all inclusive. Not sure if we can afford to go back which makes us sad. "Great Place--Especially for Families"
Royal Sands was great. My wife and I did the all-inclusive. Waiter staff is a bit short handed, so take a bunch of dollars and tip a buck a drink. You will not be ignored. Most people do not tip, and while they are not ignored, a fresh drink doesn't arrive without asking for them. Even at an (mostly) all-inclusive place, tips are what the wait staff […] lives on. You will feel pressured to tip, but it is certainly appreciated. It is a very family-oriented place, and there were a lot of kids. I liked that a lot more than a bunch of loud college kids doing shots and being rowdy. We have two grown children, so I like the "family" noise. The grounds are perfectly clean and the room was nice. I did not know that they sold memberships, and we were approached about that. I politely told the staff that I had zero interest. They dropped the subject, and didn't even offer a brochure or a free golf outing to sit through a sales pitch. That too was nice. Overall a very excellent experience. "Amazing trip!"
Please know that there are two different options to this hotel - all inclusive and European plan. If you aren't planning to drink a lot, you will save a lot of money by going with the European plan. We took two children, and went with the European plan, and we shopped for food to keep in our full kitchen in our room. The Market at the hotel has all […] that you will need, and is inexpensive. We also left the resort a couple times, and ate at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville a few blocks away, which has DELICIOUS food. The staff at the hotel are extremely friendly, and will go so far to make your stay a great one. I would highly recommend this hotel, and if we go back to Cancun, we will definitely stay here again. "This is a Time-Share Resort, NOT a Hotel !!!"
First, the good things: the staff for the most part are extremely nice (the front desk check-in clerk however was rude); clean rooms; good location, close to Kukulcan and La Isla plazas. But here's the deal-breaker, at least for me: if your trip spans a Saturday, you have to move to a new room. This is NOT repeat NOT a hotel. Royal properties are time-shares. […] Their own literature says they are not a hotel, they are a resort, and a resort only for the owner/members, not the guests. If you book a stay here, you are a guest, and preference is given to the member/owners. It's like someone else owns a condo, and all you are is someone renting the owner's condo for a couple days or week, and you have no standing at all. On the Saturday thing - time-shares run from Saturday thru Saturday, and if you are a guest (not owner) who booked a stay here, like we were, you cannot beg, plead, argue or otherwise move the check-in clerk to change that. So, not knowing this ahead of time, we booked a stay from Sun 12/23 thru Sun 12/30. On Sat 12/29, the last full day of our vacation, we had to move to a new room, wasting half of that day, even though we stayed in that new room for only 1 night before checking out. If this is not a problem, maybe RS is for you. Like I said, the staff were great. I've seen in other reviews that RS is now only offering all-inclusive plans to guests, which we weren't subject to b/c we booked so early. One other nit - I hated the bedding, it felt synthetic and cheap. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Royal Resorts, you can't go wrong"
The Royal Sands & Spa was a great hotel. The upkeep is fantastic. The staff were friendly. My negatives about the hotel were about the policies. There is a market in the complex in which you couldn't charge any items to your room. The hotel forces you to open up a "line of credit" for items bought within the hotel. You couldn't pay for any items or […] services other than with this line of credit. I had stayed at the hotel in an all-inclusive pkg and the disappointing part is that you always had to tip the staff because not everyone was all-inclusive. This meant that you are always had to bring cash with you. The food was fair. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Perfect Choice in the Hotel Zone"
Spent a week at the Royal Sands over Thanksgiving with the family. One BR suite had a king in the sleeping area, good sized bathroom and changing area with closet and safe, and huge kitchen and living room with two twin day beds which fold down from the entertainment center on either side of the TV. The room was well appointed, spotless, well decorated […] and of the quality you would expect from a 4-star hotel in the US. The balcony spans the entire room (LR and BR) and was perfect. We were in the "phase II" building. The staff is amazing at this hotel! They all go out of their way to serve you with everything you desire. One point - the all-inclusive includes tips, but please tip your maids, waiters, cabana service, etc. If you sit and drink by the pool all afternoon, would it really kill you to throw them a few bucks? The food was fresh and delicious. I heard some people in other reviews complain about portion size...my entire family thought it was generous. Also, it's ALL INCLUSIVE so if you are still hungry, ORDER MORE. Simple as that. Appetizers (ceviche, guac, etc.) were great, and the Mexican entrees and steks/seafood were good too. The all inclusive includes multiple restaurants on-site and off, so check them all out. Captain's Cove and Hacienda Sisal were the best. The All Inclusive also includes a bunch of different liquors, up to kind of "mid-shelf." There are about 8 tequilas, 8 vodkas, and 12 whiskeys on the menu for no surcharge. Enjoy! "Not all inclusive...not a problem. Would come back"
We initially weren't happy to find out that we didn't follow the fine print restrictions and weren't going to get the all inclusive deal. It ended up working out for the best as we were able to enjoy a variety of restaurants downtown - which was only a short bus ride from the resort ($1 each way and even cheaper if you are carrying pesos#. The in-house […] supermarket and bakery was extremely convenient as they carried a little bit of everything for cheap. The activities throughout the day were great and there was always something to do for those who can't just lay out by the pool - beach and pool volleyball, tennis, morning water aerobics, painting crafts, etc. The gym was not included although it was available at some rediculous rate per day or for the week #approx $20/day) In regards to the amenities, the room was ok we didn't get a villa. The A/C worked well even though it was loud so that was most important considering how muggy it was outside - all day and night. We also recommend booking an excursion through the in-house travel agent - not to be confused with your consierge which wasn't much help. We went with Selvetica via the recommendations of friends we met at the resort and it was perhaps the highlight of the trip - ziplining, off-roading, swimming, & obstacle ropes course. Overall, we must say it was well worth the money and we would gladly come back. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
