Torch Lite Inn - Santa Cruz

This hotel was very basic. No amenities. No soap for washing. But it was very convenient to the Boardwalk and to Pacific Street (downtown) which was great for us traveling on a budget.

bathroom sink would not drain call front desk and they told me to get a new key for a different room. that room had not been clean so i had to go back to the office. The front desk lady took me to several different rooms before she found one that was clean. The room smell bad and just seem dirty to me and my daughter and i felt unsafe because there […] was a homeless man on the property. Would not stay there again. Lisez la suite

Eventhough the room wreaked of cleaning supplies, the floor and the bathroom were dusty and dirty. The sheets were torn and there was no fitted sheet. The remote control did not work so we asked for another, that one also did not work. The first thing I had to do was open the window and leave the door open because of the overpowering smell of citrus cleaner. I could barely breathe. The furnishings and bed linens were clean but well worn and dingy. There was no bar soap in the bathroom. I was only in town for the night to see Over the Rhine at Kuumbwa, and the motel was within walking […] distance of the club and a great vegetarian restaurant called the Saturn Cafe. I didn't expect a great room but there were a few things that would have made my review better. First, no tv remote. Second, no soap at the sink, gave an extra shampoo container instead. Third, no knob on the heater, couldn't turn temp up. Fourth, the chain on the door was broken. Fifth, the bed comforters did not match, especially the 3 inch round […] hole in one of them. Outside of motel needed trash picked up and can someone finally fix the ice machine that appears to have been broken for months? Small changes that don't cost much but would make a huge difference. It was easy to find and took only a few minutes to walk to the Boardwalk! The hotel manager was very nice and super helpful. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable enough and we really enjoyed our stay. I would definately stay at Torchlite again, it's perfect especially if you're on a budget!!

Hi All, This hotel was ran by the most ignorant front desk. She wouldn't even look at you when you spoke to her. She was upset because she was off and made it known to everyone. So unprofessional....she left me in the middle of checking in, it was the most horrible service. I was immediately upset because I knew I paid for this crap already. The Lobby […] was disgusting the furniture in the lobby was mismatching patio chairs decorated with the dirtiest dustiest curtains I've ever seen. The rooms smelled like mildew and the tv didn't even get clear channels. It had constant snow on the screen. You know I didn't even bother to call or complain to front desk because I knew for a fact absolutely nothing was going to happen if I did. How sad is that........I wanted to leave as soon as I got there. I told my children to keep their slippers on at all times. I laid sheets down over these disgusting ones. Thank gawd we really didn't spend time in these rooms. The outside of the hotel was very old and needs alot of upgrading to it. We will never stay here again. Dont bring your family to this hotel. The pictures on the website make the motel look so nice and fresh, "not". The website advertised Complimentary Breakfast. No breakfast included, ice machine and laundryroom was out of order. The heater is located only in the room not the bathroom, so it was very cold in there. The rooms are located on a very busy street. We did not sleep at all. Because […] the motel is older, the "card key" locks were installed on old doors. You have to slam them to get the door to close all the way. So, you heard doors slamming and cars racing by all night. The people behind the desk, the older ones, have no customer service experience. Not professional at all. Front desk closes at 10:30 or 11pm, so 1st night I arrived I couldn't check in. Hair blow dryer doesn't work, couldn't get one single night of peaceful sleep for various reasons - could hear everything being said right next door, floor creaked in room above us, their own security woke me up at 1:30am telling me "your not shown on a list of paid public" […] though I had purchased 6 nights and had been there 4 so far, etc. Left early as couldn't handle another night of restless sleep. The employee at the front desk was very nice and helpful. The hotel is in a great location, walking distance from the beach and downtown Santa Cruz.

The staff was friendly, but this place is poor at best. There was no continental breakfast and no maid service in our room after the first day. We were locked out after the first day because they claimed that we only paid for the first day not the second. We believe that this was simply a tactic so they would not have to service our room. We will look […] elsewhere for a room next time. The price is cheap, but take our advice and "buyer beware." Ice machine broken, soda machine broken, lumpy bed, crowded, dark room, "complimentary breakfast" room locked tight. They somehow got AAA approved, but that needs to be looked at by AAA.

run down, over priced. the only good thing I can say about the hotel was that i was close to the boardwalk.

First we got there at 2:30 the check-in time was 2:00 ,they said our room was not ready can you come back in two hours.After informing them we already drove 5 hours we needed our room now. They gave us a room with two queen beds with un-matching comforters,they looked disgusting,the blankets had cigarette burns,the room smelled of smoke,even though […] they were supposed to be non-smoking rooms,everything in the room was dingy, and smelled stale. The ice machine did not work. The vending machine did not work. I took everything off the bed accept the sheets before I went to sleep because I couldn't bare to sleep on those nasty blankets. This hotel is in a great location by the room was not clean and had a terrible odor.

this was a good hotel but the smoke smell was still in the room which kinds of sucks. although it said there was a fridge, coffee pot, etc. none were in the room. the white doors were a bit dirty around the door handles making it feel a bit cheap and maybe for the price that's what to be expected. The one way streets in the neighborhood make it a bit tricky to find this hotel, but otherwise the location is fine. An easy walk to the boardwalk and wharf. The property is rather dated. The exterior is well updated, however the interiors need work. I could see daylight around the outline of the room door. This hotel looks nice from the outside but inside it is run down. The ice machine was broken which was disappointing considering the summer heat. It was close to the Boardwalk, which was the only nice thing. The breakfast was a joke. Cold cereal, milk, Sunny Delight and cold danish. The pool was ok, and the parking was sufficient. I haven't experienced a lodging that literally kicked us out for exercising our rights -- right to clean hair-free linen sheets and right to debris-free swim pool. Apparently someone decided we were asking too much.

Unfriendly staff, dirty bathroom with stained towels, paper thin walls so dont expect much sleep. The only positive is that it's close to the boardwalk.

This place stinks like curry! tand shower dripped and continued to flood the floor! The so called continental b fast was non existent and coffee was cold had prob been there a week. this place sucks!!!

We were allowed to check in several hours early and the service was good. The room was clean but small. It was hard to maneuver around the desk and chair in the room. The continental breakfast consisted of two types of cold cereal, jelly rolls, coffee and Sunny Delight.

Clean and very comfortable rooms, but the neighborhood was scary; people hanging out in the shadows, and alley at all hours, etc.

Very disappointed in this "Hotel". Floor flithy, facuet leaks, "non-smoking" room reaked of smoke, "continental breakfast" a joke!!!

After a very hectic weekend my daughter and I neede a break. The motel was convenient enough, and the room was clean and adequate for our needs but...the facility was a bit rundown, there was no interaction with staff, continental breakfast was a joke. Ice machine was broken, and on a holiday weekend I felt that that was bad planning. The vending machines […] did not work properly. The window screens in the bathroom were ripped. We had to avoid a violent confrontation in the parking lot, so apparently no one on staff was keeping an eye on what was going on on their property. The pool area looked to have a few tables,(broken) and an inadequate amount of chairs to guest ratio. The chairs that were available were very cheap and un comfortable. There was one chaise lounge to be shared by all the guests present. The pool rules and information chart was hung so high up on a wall that they were impossible to read. The room we were given was so poorly lit, that you had to open the door to be able to see, the air conditioner was not working properly so we had to open windows in order to get a cross breeze into the room. It was an adequate place to sleep and shower but if you are looking for a few more comforts and need to stay for more than one night there are many more options in the area. Lisez la suite

Great location - just a very short walk to the Boardwalk and Wharf and very close to Pacific Avenue and Downtown. Great pool, not too cold. The room was very nice and also clean, and a nice patio area outside also. Free wireless! Only negative was the breakfast, which was really very poor, but I didn't feel that was a big deal.

This hotel is run down, in need of basic upgrades. The staff was rude at check-in and during a phone call to advise the TV was not working. Continental breakfast consisted of a small amount of wrapped pastry's "only one per person" warm milk and watered down coffee (we went to fast food breakfast instead). The ice machine and juice machine were "out […] of order". The room was dirty, the bathtub was black with dirt, the room smelled unclean. Nothing like the pictures show. Very bad experience. This hotel was a bit run down, loud and close to apartment living where all sorts of shady characters seemd to lurk. The bathrooms were sparse, clean but still seemed "icky" to me. Vending machines were empty as was the ice dispenser. The swimming pool was the best part of the stay. It is close to the boardwalk but situated on a very loud and busy traffic […] intersection. hotel had decent rooms, very surprised at room after extremely poor check-in (clerk answered phone when starting check-in and then ignored me until he finished phone call). Wireless internet poor, 7:30am office still closed, no complimentary continental breakfast. location to beach/boardwalk and room was the only positive about this. doesn't live up […] to ammenities at all. We stayed here midweek in the first part of June. Found the property and the rooms to be well kept and clean. The Torch Lite is an easy 5-10 minute walk to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It was a basic but tidy room with working coffee maker, refrigerator, and microwave. Despite the fact the continental breakfast was a waste (lame danishes, two choices […] of cereal, no juice, no milk) and the ice machine was broken we enjoyed our stay here. Lisez la suite

Location is good but the shower was hard to operate. The breakfast was coffee and packaged danish. The juice machine didn't work. Room was comfortable. I'd give it "C" overall.

We just wanted a decent place to crash for the night, and we found it. Nice, clean room, comfy bed, close to boardwalk and downtown. Quiet at night. Nice clean pool area, though we didn't use it, it made for a nice view from our room. Hotel staff was always friendly; the gentleman who checked us in made conversation while he helped us. Plenty of parking […] for guests. Only problem was that there was a sign for a free continental breakfast but we couldn't find it when we got up in the morning. Could have been because we stayed on a slow night, and maybe they only do breakfast on weekends, i dunno?
