The location of this hotel makes it a great place to stay. A short walk to the train station, down the block from La Place Massena with its plentiful restaurants, cafes and shops, and down the street from the Tram stop for local transportation within Nice. It's also a 10 minute walk to the beaches and Vieux Ville (the Old City) with its local flower […] market and restaurants. Lots to do and see in a short distance. We took the train to Monaco for a quick 15 minute ride. The train rides along the coastline for a beautiful view of the Cote d'Azure, the French Riviera. Stops at local beaches all along its route. The hotel looks a bit older at first impression, but the room was nice and the bathroom was large by French standards. The staff was very helpful and the manager understood English. My only complaint was the housekeeping staff did not. We wanted to sleep in one morning and the staff kept returning every 15 minutes to make up our room. They appeared not to understand when asked to return (and I speak passable French) and disregarded the do not disturb sign on the door. This was a minor inconvenience. First time to NIce and the location could not have been better. It is in walking distance to shops, restaurants, Old Town, beaches and casino! The room is extremely small and clean but does not offer any toiletries, except a liquid soap dispenser. Hats off to the front desk crew, each employee more pleasant than the next and extremely helpful in providing […] tips, maps, etc.The breakfast buffet was okay, no "hot" food served, and the opening hours from 7 - 10am is stretching it. At 8:30am basically nothing is left,. The first morning at 9:00am there was no more bread. When we asked for bread the attendant went took bread that someone else left on a dirty table and put it in the basket. When we complained that was not acceptable she took the bread and threw it in the trash. Finally she put out a plate of white american sliced bread, we are in France, right? Enough about the hotel, do visit Castle Hill, overlooking "cote D'Azur" a spectacular view of the city. Old Town, Finocchio's for gelato, a must ( not Pinocchio's) and St Paul de Venice the prettiest city by far. Eze Village, Monaco, there are so many things to do. The bus is 1 euro to many places and a 7day pass from the airport for 15euros, is well worth it. Lisez la suite

I only have one criticism of the hotel, that is the room. This was our fifth time staying at the Univers. We have stayed in different rooms all over this hotel before it was re-furbished, when it was being re-furbished and in August just past, after re-furbishment. This I have to say was our most disappointing visit yet. Mind you nothing that a good […] scrub with mould cleaner would not solve. We stayed for a week at the Hotel Univers. It's a basic hotel but the location is excellent, 100 yards from Messena Square and 500 yards from beach. Staff were very friendly. First of all, the staff was amazing! Very friendly and helpful in many ways. The location was perfect. Having never been to Nice, we didn't know what to expect, but we were just a short 5 minute walk from the beach & restaurants, & just steps away from shopping & banks. It was also about a 10 minute walk from the train station - which we did, without […] a problem! I travelled with 3 others & they were able to put us in side by side rooms. The rooms were comfortable & bathrooms were clean. My only complaints....the A/C in my room didn't work (the other room was fine) but we just left the windows open & slept through the street noise. And the free wireless only worked in the hallways or the lobby. We could not get a signal in the rooms. Other than that - which really are just luxuries - the 2 night stay was perfect! I was really surprised with how great the hotel was. After having an horrendous experience with the hotels in Cannes, Hotel Univers was a great finish to two long weeks working in the French Riviera. I travelled to Nice with a few colleagues and we arrived at Hotel Univers with ease. It's right next to a tram stop so it was easy to get on a train from […] Cannes to Nice and then hop aboard a tram 2 minutes down the road. The hotel was very accommodating, our room was very spacious and the bathroom was clean and tidy. To be honest the only bad thing about the room was the size of the shower, which is quite compact, but you get used to that after a while. Other than that- no complaints. The service was really good too. From the concierge to the maid- everyone was very polite and helpful- something i really wasn't used to after being in Cannes. Lisez la suite

The Hotel was old and the bathroom was extremely small and smelt. The rooms were clean, however their was a old smell about them. The corridors leading to your room were dark and it was a rabbit warren.

The hotel was full on an early check-in, the first night's room faced inwards with no natural light, however this was remedied next day most efficiently. Beds were firm but very comfortable. Wifi excellent, breakfast costly so fed elsewhere. Very good location.

Excellent 3 star hotel, very close to the city centre, short walk to the beach, old town and train station, staff were very pleasant, breakfast was plentiful. Only negative was twin beds not a double but it wasn't a huge problem, beds were comfortable.

I stayed here with my girlfriend as a birthday treat. Location is great but that is about all. I think they were fully booked so they decided to put us on the 5th floor in a loft coversion. It was nothing more than a hostel. There was no carpet, no dressing table or mirror, skylight windows, lights were flickering, the shower curtain hugged you as you […] showered in a tiny cubicle, there was a campbed to sleep in, no wardrobe doors on - do I need to go on. They told us to use the hairdryer in the bathroom!!!!!!!! The other rooms I cannot speak for but the 5th floor is disgusting. This was the fourth time my wife and I have stayed in this clean and adequately appointed, for its age, hotel. Maid service was on a daily basis. The hotel has undergone major refurbishment within the last 3 years. The wifi connection does work most of the time, whether this was because of our location in the hotel I was not sure. However it did always […] work in the lounge and in the dining room which was sufficient as I could keep in touch with my daughter on honeymoon in the Maldives, on a daily basis using my ipod.The hotel is centrally situated, a stone's throw away from Galerias Lafayette a fabulous store on 5 levels which contained everything from Gucci handbags to tins of petit pois. The large central square is another 100 metres along the road. As described, the hotel has rooms of varying size and shape, some having baths and some having a shower. When we were there a week ago a card was provided in the electricity slot to keep the air conditioning on all the time which was fortunate as the day time temps. were in the high 20's and low 20's at night. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and were courtious at all times. Their standard of english was excellent and a few words of french from us brought a smile to their faces. When I was looking for somewhere to stay in Nice I read lots of reviews from different websites. All left me confused about where to stay as they were all so mixed; especially when it came to this hotel. A supermarket across the road with another one just up the street. Perfect for access to the old town and the beach.It is right beside the main square where we spent one evening watching the entertainment and the dancing (Very romantic). Very close to bars and restaurants - really just perfect in every way. The hotel itself was super. The staff were so friendly. The room was small but that is expected with French hotels but it was not a problem in the slightest - we found it quite comfortable - literally became a wee home for us during our stay. The rooms were extremely clean. A quaint little place. I would definitely recommend this hotel for travellers. The only issue anyone could have would be with the size of the rooms but again if you're not bothered you are set. It is so hard reading lots of reviews that confuse you as they are so mixed. Also, the last night of our stay the air conditioning system broke and they advised us that it wouldn't be fixed until the next day. This hotel is very close to "Place Massena", a nice large plaza at the center of the main pedestrian zone (where all the restaurants, nice shos, etc. are). It's also righ across the street to the very fancy tram line that goes to the train station, the bus station, etc. The hotel is also a very short walk (less than 1/3 of a mile) from the old town […] and the bus station (where one can catch a bus, for a very low price, to Monaco, Cannes, Eze, etc.). The Nice airport is reachable in 20 minutes using a bus that stops about 300 yards away. Regarding the hotel itself, the staff is very courteous and helpful. They do speak English, will answer all sorts of questions about how to get somewhere or where to find stores or restaurants, etc. The rooms are not as large as we are used to in the states, but there is still plenty of space for two people. Disclaimer: we spent ten days in Paris before we came to Nice so the room in this hotel seemed gigantic compared to what we had in Paris. Lisez la suite

We stayed at De l'Univers for 4 nights during our travels through Nice. The pro of the hotel was location. Just blocks from the beach and Old Town, it was very easy to relax at the beach and then head for dinner. However, that very good pro was significantly outweighed by the numerous cons. First, we asked for a room not along the main street which […] has a metro line. After we were assured the room would be quiet we accepted the room which was in the corner of the building facing 2 major streets. If the double pane windows weren't closed, it was extremely loud, and even with them shut, you could still hear street sounds. The room was clean, but the bathroom needed a major revamp. The soap dispenser was lying on the sink top instead of attached to the wall. The shower head was in the center of the tube with only a small wall to one side. Even if you took off the shower head, water would still go all over the bathroom because the individual sprays went every direction possible. Probably the worse part of our stay was the smell. Every time the sink was turned on, a foul stench came up from the drain. On our last night there we walked into the lobby to meet the most foul stench of sewer ever and the elevator broken. An hour later we walked back down to leave for dinner and they had sprayed the entire floor with air refresher to cover the stench. It was horrible. If we weren't leaving early the next morning, I would have checked out and found another hotel. Lisez la suite

The reception staff were very pleasant, and the breakfast was fine except for the coffee, which was from a machine, and not good. Our only complaint was about the size of the bedroom. It was very small, so small that we had to move the beds to get at the wardrobe, […] and there were no bedside tables as there was no room! We didnt want to spend any longer there than absolutely neccessary, and as I was away with my elderly mother who needed a bit of a rest in the afternoon, I wouldnt really go there again, as it was a bit closterphobic. Decent superior twin room with a narrow balcony, even through the bathroom. Friendly staff. Good breakfast, fresh choices, plenty of room. Bus traffic on one-way street under the window from early morning somewhat disturbing, otherwise normal hotel sounds. For some reason the mattresses were changed during the third day and on the fourth day we found […] the other single bed changed to a double bed which made three beds together and a quite small room more crowded. Perfekt beliggenhed og pæne rene værelser. En del støj fra gaden. Savnede et lille køleskab på værelset. Der er dog automat ved receptionen, så man kan købe noget koldt eller lidt snack, så alt i alt godt. Ansatte på hotellet meget hjælpsomme.
