Ocean Gate Inn - Santa Cruz

Uncomfortable chair. Only HBO on TV. Lots of early morning street traffic noise (5:30 Sunday morning). Door lock/jam needs repair.

great basic hotel. basic ammenities. not a great neighborhood & they had signs warning to lock the car doors due to break ins. nice hotel staff. the outside deck door was broken & when we asked for it to be fixed the owners were off the premises. some other tenants tried to help us fix it, although very kind they could not help.

the ocean gate was a very basic hotel, kept very clean.the rooms were clean and the hotel was conienniently located for the boardwalk

This was the worst hotel and worst service I have EVER encountered. The front desk service was rude from point of check-in. The walls were paper-thin and it sits on a busy street. The trash truck sounded as though it was coming THROUGH our room. The second night, the neighbors were screaming and running and I'm pretty sure they were playing "Quarters." […] We called the office and asked them to call the room next door and ask them to lower the volume a bit. We tolerated the night before, but could no longer stand it. Within the next five minutes, the neighbors started screamin, "F*** YOU!" over and over again. We called the front desk again and informed them that we wanted to move hotels and that we wanted our money back. He said that there was "not a chance" that we were going to get our money back. We continued to insist and ended up compromising to a different room. When we went downstairs to get a new key, he wanted us to pack up all of our stuff and move it then. It was 11:45pm. We had to pitch a fit to get another room key. He made us stand outside at midnight, in a terrible neighborhood while he made a new key card. It was, by far, the worst hotel experience that we have ever had!! Hands down. We have never insisted on being moved or our money back if that gives you any idea of how bad this stay was... It's quite cheap and a short drive to downtown. One of the two lamps didn't work and the lightswitch didn't seem to do anything, but I didn't rent the room for the lamps.

The staff was very friendly, the young lady from the front desk gave me directions to some of the popular sights. The room was clean and had all the ammentaties that I needed. Great location and clean environment.

So, we stayed here last weekend for my birthday, and because of one of the owners of the hotel, my birthday sucked! Yes, we might have been a little loud, but the way she handled things was completely uncalled for! I do not ever recommend saying here just for the fact that you might have to deal with her. Stay here for 4days for - the price its a good holtel I have been in better holtels but much higher price .good bang for the Buck

I heard people having sex until 2:00AM.

The hotel is ok, everything u need, clean. Its just that the street outside is really loud... And the advertised "VIEW" was not really what u expect. It is towards the street, some water chanel and fair (not working in Nov).

Excellent location a block from the pier and Boardwalk. Staff was friendly and the roomwas very clean. I would stay there again.

I would never stay at this hotel ever again. The room is dirty and the bed is hard as a rock and the walls are ultra thin so you can hear everything in the other room. Don't stay here.

I only stayed a single night but I don't think I would stay there again. Price wasn't too bad but let's face it the place needs work. Outside is ok but the rooms need some updates.

Okay, i wasn't expecting much. Price was very good and that is why I chose it. Pro's..... TV was clear. The elevator is centrally located. The place is freshly painted inside. The owner is painting the exterior of the place this week. The balcony facing the boardwalk is nice. If they remodeled the rooms, they could get a lot more for each room because […] the location is great! The refrigerator was small and clean. The internet worked very well. Con's.... Wow, the parking spaces are soooo narrow. The beds need replacing. They are quite firm, but not in a good way. One pillow was big and could be down feather, and one pillow was quite small. Maybe I am a germaphobe, but the carpet looked OLD! The furnishings are older too. The walls are pretty thin. The couple nextdoor could be heard in their conversation quite clearly. The road noise is also poor. The locals call the area that the hotel is located "Santa Cruz Flats". I was surprised to learn that this area so close to the ocean was considered really run down. The outlet that we plugged our cell phones into needs to be replaced. The plug fell out more than once. They need a microwave! (ok, i know, that is a little greedy) Overall, it looks like the owner is conscientous. He is making the effort to ensure a positive guest experience at the price point he is striving for. He was also quite pleasant. I hope that he continues investing in his hotel. The location was fabulous. So, new furniture, linens, and maybe a double pane slider (noise) and this place would be quite an experience. Lisez la suite

I booked this hotel because it was less expensive than some of the other hotels in the same area and because it was close by the wedding I was attending. I knew from reading the reviews not to expect too much in the areas of comfort, so I wasn't surprised by what I found. The room we stayed in was mostly clean, but there was some mold on the shower […] curtain. The beds were a little too soft for my taste, but they did the job. My husband was pleased to find that the hotel has DirecTV, so he got to watch his beloved college football games. The owner was friendly enough--check-in and check-out were easy. We didn't have any trouble with parking, but the lot is tight. Overall--it was a decent hotel for the price in the area. It's walking distance to the Boardwalk and a short cab ride to Downtown Santa Cruz. If you value pristine cleanliness or fancy mattresses--stay somewhere else. Lisez la suite

Hotel was a little below average but you get what you pay for. Not a place to impress a girl but will do if she already likes you.

could walk downtown but a little far to the beach. Staff nice enough but it is a discount hotel and can not be expected to be 4 star. Fair value especially for someone just looking for a place to sleep. I would stay again.

overall was good ,shower heads alittle stained and dirty the carper did smell like humid but the rest of the experience was good the microwave and refigerator was very convenient I wouldn't use the coffe maker but the distance to the beach was very very convenient

Although this is not the Ritz Carlton I was pleased with the cleanliness of the room and the quality of the mattress and the room. The bathrooms can use a do over, but all worked and I was pleased.

The view was great from the room, we Walked to the boardwalk and that saved us parking and gas. Overall the stay was wonderful. I'll probably be staying here again if we go back to Santa Cruz.

I am just going to outright say that it is the worst hotel I've seen. There were cracks on the cieling with water damage, the lights above the balcony were on the verge of falling (some balconies didn't even have light fixtures anymore). Half of the lights in both rooms didn't work, or would turn on by themselves. There were cigarette burns on the floor […] in a "Non-Smoking" room, and it smelt terrible in the rooms themselves. The shower curtain and nob were rittled with dirt, making me not even want to shower, let alone touch it to turn it on. Most of the dressers were missing their pull nobs in our hotel, and the other hotel my friend was staying in had the same issue. They also didn't have the channels on the TV that they listed on their list of things included in the hotel. We only stayed one night but I have to say that the price wasn't worth even the close proximity of the Boardwalk. Also their "Continental Breakfast" was literally a box of cereal and a carton of milk left out for quiet a while. So beware when booking this hotel. It may be close to the beach, but don't expect to get a hotel you want to spend more time in. Lisez la suite

Room was dirty. Stains on bedding. Floors not vacuumed, very loud room. Beds are old and not comfortable at all. Its shelter I suppose but not worth the price The only pro? Its close to the boardwalk.

We stayed here for a week while visiting Santa Cruz. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that is is close to everything but there are a lot of hotels closer to everything and not much more pricey! The parking was scary, backing in between two cement columns inches from your mirrors. The room was gross, we had a wet towel and old clothes […] in our drawers from the last guest! The bed was practically all springs and the sheets did not fit so the first morning we woke up sleeping on the bare mattress! We bought a bath mat, some air freshener and a new pair of sheets and it was bearable...but that almost negated the money we saved staying there! I would recommend looking into the Super 8 right across the bridge, not much more expensive but way nicer! Lisez la suite

The manager/owner was very nice and accomodating. The parking lot and surrounding area was pretty scary but nothing happened to our vehicle. Room was clean, mattress was not very good. If looking for inexpensive and clean I would rate it a 5. If looking for comfort and area I would rate it a 3. Management was very nice though!

Very clean, had nice things like microwave and refrigerator. They gave us use of a coffee maker on request. Very nice people. Short walk to boardwalk. Would stay again. Nice view of roller coaster, etc. We saw July fireworks from our room window. Comfortable radiant heat from above.

the cable box was broke the manager could not fix it so he put me in a better room for the same cost

Working in Santa Cruz and have tried other hotels but returned here. The couple who run the place are so nice and very accommodating. Love the private balcony. They have done a good job of renovating an older hotel. Parking is a little tight but not a major problem. Close to good restaurants, beach, and yacht harbor. Very reasonable prices.

A leaky faucet in the bath wasn't attended to until the last night of my 2 night stay. Too much traffic noise and overall drabness make it so I will not go there again or recommend it. It was close to where I wanted to be, just not cozy. No dvd player. No extras--and not cheap!

Cool place if you want a cheap hotel close to re boardwalk

It is in a bad neighborhood. The hallways were dark with almost no lighting. The lock on our door was poor at best. It was a knob lock and the door was flimsy. The place was so bad, we checked out and went somehwere else.

Not bad for the price. A little further walk to Pacific Avenue and the Wharf. Outside of the hotel needs some work. Parking is tight!

Big, clean room. Good channel selection and WIFI.

The rate I got was very fair. The room was close to everything I needed. I would stay there again.

We had excellent customer service at the hotel. The desk clerk was very friendly and helpful. He suggested 2 places for us to eat. One dinner and one breakfast. We tried them both and they were 5 Star. The room was very clean, big, had a microwave, tv, frig and coffee pot. All rooms seem to have a balcony which was nice. I would stay there again. The […] price was great. The only thing is it is on a main road and we heard the traffic all night long and the parking area was quite small. Covered parking is ok if you have a small compact car so we had to park around the back as my car would not fit in the covered spaces (too many poles). It is very close to the boardwalk and you have a view of the water if you are not on the ground floor. Ok for a night but too much traffic noise for a week stay for us. Lisez la suite

Boardwalk, the condition of the hotel was run-down and we did not get a smoking room as requested in our reservation. The first night, we had no creamer for our coffee & the front desk had none, either. Walked to a small nearby store to buy some. Next day, after being out all day and most of evening, returned to a cold room (sliding glass door left […] open). Room service took old coffee cups/plastic cups but did not leave new replacements, and did not stock coffee bar at all! Good thing we had our own... would not recommend. Lisez la suite

not to bad for the price. the room smiled like it had been smoked in for a non smoking room. walking distance to boardwalk was great. great for just a few nights.

The room had trash under the bad. Blankets had cigarette burns. The smell in the room was awful. The place looked run down.

Other than the big Iron Burn on the carpet it was perfect! Great location with access to everything I like about Santa Cruz Area.
