Cornell Hotel De France was within about two blocks of China town and the cable cars. The management was excellent and very helpful. Breakfast was not continental but a full hot meal. I felt like I was back in France, as the decor was very French. Beautiful and interesting art hung everywhere. I will return to the Cornell whern every I return to S. […] F. Lisez la suite
"A Find"
Terrifically placed in San Fran with easy access to the cable car and China Town. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Charming French touches everywhere! Definitely "a find"!
"Cornell Hotel de France"
The room was tiny with a bed, small closet and a very small desk that was impossible to sit at. The bathroom was adequate. Window was onto a ventilation shaft. Bed was lumpy and not very comfortable. Pillows were ancient. On the plus side, the location is very close to Union Square and the wireless was free. We didn't try the 'American style' free breakfast. […] Hotel is bordering on ancient so don't have high expecations and you will be fine. I wouldn't suggest staying here for more than 2 nights at most. Lisez la suite
"Cornell Hotel - great boutique hotel accommodation"
I stayed four nights at the Cornell while in San Francisco. I liked the fact that it was not a chain hotel but had character all its own. I especially liked the lift which was of the old fashioned kind with the cage doors. It did not have a 24hr front desk but you had a key to the front door and could come and go as you pleased. The staff were very […] helpful and low key. The rooms were small but contained everything you could possibly need and a cooked breakfast was included in the price. It was located just 2 blocks from Union Sq (shopping district) and Chinatown, a 20 min walk from the Ferry Building and in the other direction City Hall. It is right on the corner of Powell St where you can catch the cable cars to the Wharf area, Lombard St and North Beach. There are a whole range of little French restaurants in close facinity including in the hotel itself (Tues - Sat only) for delicious moderate dining in the evenings. All the tours pick up there. For the price I paid it was a fantastic choice and I would go there again. Lisez la suite
"Great place I will stay there again."
If you are looking for a place to stay with a really comfy bed then you need to stay at the Cornell Hotel de France. I also really enjoyed the traditional 4 leg tub and shower. The place was really clean and right down the street from Union Square. I will plan to stay at the Cornell Hotel de France again. Great for singles and couples that are looking […] for a inexpensive place to stay in the city. Lisez la suite
"Visit"
Kind of odd to have a Male Review Club next door. It's the first thing you see when you look for the hotel. The room was clean but the breakfast area was crowded to the point that we just left the hotel and went elsewhere. Not bad. Not good.
"Uncomfortable and loud"
There was no air conditioning and little insulation from all of the street noise! Not a good combination for the light sleeper...
"Amazingly quiet hotel"
Charming old hotel convenient to Union Square area. 2 dogs greet you at check in. Breakfast isn't served until 7:30, a little late for the business traveler. Despite closeness to cable car, my room was quiet and I sleep well.
"Cornel Hotel in San Francisco, CA"
Very old fashion Hotel but so comfortable. The decoration it's beautiful. Close to Bart, Cable car, Union Square.....I really recommend.
"Nice but could be more functional"
We're okay with a small room, as long as if functions efficiently. In the bathroom for instance, the only towel bar was holding two nice bath towels, but there wasn't a place to hang a hand towel, wash cloth, robe, etc. Suggest adding towel rings or hooks as there was plenty of empty wall space to accommodate. Also, I use a hanging toiletries travel […] bag and would have liked a high hook near the sink area for easy access so I never have to unpack my toiletries. Only a small soap dish in shower - no place for shampoo, etc. except on shower floor. With those minor fixes, hotel would be perfect! (Hope they are reading this!) Have stayed many times. Lovely and charming with a great staff, full American breakfast in the beautiful onsite restaurant, and great location just 2 blocks from Union Square. Highly recommend! Lisez la suite

"satisfied"
The hotel oozes charm, very much like hotels in France where I have stayed, right down to the very small (supposed to be mid- sized) room. There was some maintenance going on but it did not interfere with our stay. The breakfast waitress/room maid was an absolute delight, starting our day off on the right foot. Front desk very helpful with our tourist […] questions. Lisez la suite
"quaint"
Cornell hotel de France was a really nice stay. It is a very quaint hotel, very European. Everything was very clean and the staff was really nice and accomodating. Breakfast was really good and plentiful. The rooms are defnitely small, but that's to be expected for a European-style hotel. I loved all of the French decor, and I will definitely stay there […] again! Lisez la suite
"Our one night stay at the Cornell Hotel de France"
There was some confusion between the hotel and hotels.com booking my husband and I and our 16 yr. old in a cozy queen room. We had stated we were a party of 3 however a cozy queen has no room for a rollaway. The hotel wanted us to pay more money for a larger room. I did not think this was our responsibility and eventually we were provided with a larger […] room. The room had an old world charm but may not be for everyone. Although the area is mixed there are alot of people out in the evening and we did not feel unsafe. The breakfast room made our stay worth it and we enjoyed the breakfast which was brought out for you from a choice of 2 selections. Lisez la suite
"Our recent stay at Cornell"
We stayed four nights at the Cornell. The staff was attentive and answered all our questions. The room was comfortable and quiet. No noise from any rooms above or around ours- very nice! Breakfasts were simple but well prepared and tasty. Right along cable car and bus routes- very convenient.

"Worth staying at"
I chose this hotel based on rate and the reviews that I read about it. It certainly lived up to them. Will stay there again in a heartbeat.
"Cute little hotel with many surprises"
This is a great little hotel. Decorated in the manner of a French country house with a wonderful French restaurant in the basement. Just one block from Union Square and right on the Cable Car line. Super convenient and very reasonable.
"Charming and good value"
The hotel is a good value for its great location close to Union Square. The staff were very friendly, free wifi was fast and reliable, and the hotel is very charming and quaint---well decorated with lots of nice little touches. The rooms are quite small, with only a stand-up shower in a somewhat cramped bathroom, but not a major issue if you aren't […] spending a lot of time in your room. You may also get a room that looks out onto an airshaft. The complementary breakfast is fantastic. You get a choice of meals (on the morning I was there, eggs or French toast) with OJ and coffee, the service is great, and the dining room is really beautifully decorated. Lisez la suite
"hotel cornell tres FRENCH"
Front desk & breakfast personnel were friendly. French could be heard from guests as well as staff. Bed & pillows were comfortable. We were upgraded to a larger room which was still quite small. Space radiator was VERY noisy. Claw bathtub with attached shower curtain was a tight fit & water temperature was variable.
"Two blocks further and a world away"
Stayed at Cornell while at a major tourism conference. We were two blocks away from many of our counterparts, most who stayed in the big box look a like hotels. While they were closer and in rooms with more space, we had a place with charm, character, a truly foreign breakfast experience everyday and a totally "on vacation" feel.
"Quaint, Unique but needs face lift"
The hotel is decked out with french furniture, paintings and artifacts which is quite quaint. Adequate breakfast is included in the price. The location is superb, walking distance to Union Square, China town, tram cars, trolley, bus & trains. The 4 course dinner on offer for $42pp was fair but there is plenty of choice of eateries close by for similar […] money. The only negative is that the bedroom furniture needs updating, it is looking tired and a new bedspread would benefit the ambiance greatly. Lisez la suite

"A hidden gem"
A great little B & B
"Smallest room I've ever seen"
Terrible service. Stayed for Bay to Breakers. Wouldn't allow late check out. Other hotels in area (even the small ones) had coffee in the lobby for participants. Their comment was "too bad you won't be here for breakfast." Bathroom was so small you had to do the sidestep to get past the sink. Would not stay there again.

"Charming and friendly"
This was a lovely little hotel, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I would have liked to stay longer. The style is old-fashioned European, which I found charming, and the owners and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location was great. I have nothing bad to say about this place - I definitely recommend!
"Nice little hotel"
Like a bit of Paris in the middle of San Francisco. Terrific handpainted murals on the walls and room doors. Nice staff and cute, clean hotel. Rooms a bit small but typical for SF
"Great find near Union Square"
We had a great stay in this hotel. Our room was on the top floor facing the inner courtyard and was relatively quiet. Our hairdryer attached to the wall was not working, but it was no problem to get a replacement from the front desk. The eggs at breakfast were not very good, but I'm not complaining since it was free. Get to the restaurant early otherwise […] you will have to wait. There was just one lady working on serving and busing all the tables. I would definitely stay here again. Lisez la suite

"Cornell Hotel de France"
Quaint, old world charm. The rooms were not modern but since all we did was sleep the night in it, it was good enough. Hotel staff was great and friendly. Breakfast was good. Would stay here again.
"Cornell Hotel de la France - great location"
Loved our stay at this very pretty hotel. It is in a very convenient location to Union Square, very quiet with comfortable bedding and good shower. Also, the included breakfast is great as well. Cereals, juice, coffee/tea,with hot cooked meals included as well. Can't fault the hotel and it would be difficult to do any better. We only stayed two nights […] to break a long journey from the east coast and wished we were able to stay longer. The staff were all very pleasant. Definitely recommend this hotel. Lisez la suite
"Not Recommended"
I stay anywhere from 50-75 nights per year in hotels around the country. The Hotel de France is adequate, but I do not recommend it. I have stayed just up the street at the White Swan Inn properties or down the street at the Grand Hyatt and both are much better options. The staff at this hotel are fine, but the gentleman who was working the night of […] my arrival was rude and I am almost positive that he is the owner. Basically, he must have forgotten that he was in the hospitality industry and that is what pays his bills. When I called the desk from my cell phone to let him know that the phone in the room was not working and to get the internet code, he was put out. He asked me repeatedly if I was sure that the phone was not working and he could not comprehend how I could be calling him if the room phone was not working. Oh, the wonders of cell phones. He then preceded to come up to the room and frustratedly tried to fix the phone which he was eventually able to. While this is not a big deal and it is not a "horrible" review, I must say that I do not plan on staying at this Hotel again and I travel to the Bay area about every other week. Lisez la suite
"Cornell Hotel de France--a great value"
The Cornell Hotel was a great deal for me during my conference stay in San Francisco. The reasonable daily rate included a wonderful full breakfast (the coffee is great) as well as free wireless Internet. It's a small hotel, so it doesn't have a big fitness center or other amenities, but the location is perfect and the staff is attentive and friendly. […] The restaurant is fantastic, be sure to have at least one dinner there--a four course fixed price French dinner in a charming dining room. Lisez la suite

"Cornell Hotel de France"
Very fench. Cute rooms, perfect location and a cozy atmosphere. And breakfast is included. (rooms a bit on the small side though, and the tv wasn't really worth watching)
"I love this hotel!"
I was very happy with our stay at the Cornell Hotel. It is such a cute hotel with a vintage feel. It had a european hotel feel to me. The elevator is the best part! The decor of the hotel and the restaurant was great. The room and bathroom were not huge, but big enough. The hotel is very well located to Union Square--lots of shops and restaurants within […] walking distance. We were very pleased with everything and will definitely stay there again! Lisez la suite
"Decent location, quiet if you keep windows closed"
Clean but outdated rooms. no remote in my room, asked to get a new remote instead they moved us to a smaller room w/ tv and remote. And no apologies from front desk, I felt like they were annoyed that I was asking for a remote. I like channel surfing, what? Close to a lot of spots, quaint but no AC can be stuffy.

"Amazing place"
Have traveled the world and this place is a comparative Jewel. The owners operate this boutique hotel to a high level of professionalism and quality. The restaurant in the basement was the real surprise, the best meal we had during our weeks stay and a real French eat-it-nowor-it will-fall souffle! 100 feet from a cable car stop, 1 block from a Walgreens […] - very convenient. Particularly liked the French artist motif of each floor with gallery staged lighting on the paintings (reproductions, of course) lining the halls. Extremely well maintained building. Only knock we had was the bathroom which had a garage style flourescent light fixture and duct tape fix on the flexible shower head - softer colors, pictures, and other finishes would make the bathrooms a lot less stark to view. "Extremely pleased with my stay."
What a wonderful cozy hotel. I would stay there in a heart beat again. You have to appreciate an old style victorian style buildings because this is what you have here. It's a perfect stay for a couple. Loved the old fashion elevator. Close to everything. I recommend. Staff is the best...
"Cornell , nice restruant"
Thank you Richard for making us feel at home . This is a real sweet little hotel with a great free breakfast . Atmosphere is cool , and the basement restruant has a nice hand hewn grotto look that we loved . Only thing was we would have liked a refer & microwave , but they very sweetly allowed us to keep our items cold in the walk-in . Thanks !
"Cute boutique hotel"
Hotel was cute, bed was comfortable, bathroom nice, nothing really bad other than that I had turned on the radiator for heat & didn't turn it off right, so it made noise all night. My bad for not knowing how to use an older heating system! Was much better than a stuffy unit like new hotels though! I would stay here again.
"Cornell Hotel - a nice little neighborhood"
This is a nice little hotel in a great neighborhood. It's two blocks from Union Square, right on the Powell street car line. The area seems quite safe at night, although a few blocks west is not so nice. Didn't find much not to like - the room was small and is an older style and layout. But it's a historic old building, so what else would you expect? Room […] was very clean, the bathroom was recently renovated and very nice with a wall-to-wall mirror on one side, a claw-foot tub and nice glass tiles. Breakfast is excellent, staff is very friendly. There's a little restaurant called "Swell" about a block east on Bush that I would highly recommend as a nice little neighborhood place. Would certainly stay here again for business or vacation. Lisez la suite
"It's an odd place"
I couldn't quite decide if it is quaint or creepy. It has definitely seen better days. The blankets were probably 20 years old. It was clean and the hotel staff was nice but it is a very unique place.
"Great location, but couldn't sleep"
The radiator was incredibly loud all night, the toilet ran all night and didn't flush well, the shower was claustrophobic, and the bed was not particularly comfortable. If you don't need much to be comfortable, this hotel has a great location and is a good value, but I had trouble sleeping.
"A touch of France"
While small, the room was kept clean and tidy. The hotel is an excellent place to wander downtown and then relax. The basement restaurant is a hidden gem of SF that has been there for several decades. Breakfast was simple and just right. Again, be redy for a small space with no room for a fridge or microwave but well worth it.
