"Beautiful property but hard to get around"
The property was beautiful and had its own reserve with hiking trails, unfortunately it is spread out over a steep hillside and had very poor parking at the facilities. If you wanted to wait for the shuttle you would be okay but we were in the farthest building at the top of the property and had a rental car. Room was nice and bathroom was outstanding. […] Breakfast was included but you had to pay $2 extra if you wanted pancakes, or an omlet. These were included at the 3 other places we stayed on our 11 day journey across Costa Rica. "great breakfast brunch"
We loved El Establo and felt very comfortable and safe on the property. The only problem we encountered was the cost of the children. When most properties charge an average of $35 for kids above 12. El Establo charged $50 for kids above 9. Maybe this differs depending upon season, yet we were disappointed in that we did not catch this fact early on. "Nice place, but"
Several things. This hotel is very large with numerous buildings. We stayed at the top of the resort (900 level). While the views are fantastic, it is a mile to the bottom of the mountain. The complimentary shuttle is convenient but you need to plan on 20 minutes for the shuttle to get to the top if your room is there and then all the way down. Final […] thing, the lights in the corridor are extremely bright and there is a large window above each room door. A lot of light comes into the rooms at night. "Disappointment"
An expensive hotel but a great disappointment. We were three in the room but they gave us only two towels every day. When we showered one after the other, the hot water finished in the middle! "Large, Breezy Rooms"
The rooms at El Establo are larger by far than most New York City studio apartments. Ours, and did all the others, featured spectacular views across the Gulf of Colorado and the mountains of the pennisula to its west. Others have commented that noise from the hallways bleeds into the sleeping rooms. It's true but it's not terrible. And they sound can […] be reduced by closing ventilation louvers. The noise was infrequent during our stay; we may not have even noticed had it not been pointed out by others. The grounds follow the rather steep slope of the mountain on which they are laid out. Vans are provided to ferry one up and down. This served us well when we wanted to explore the top of the mountain, a nature reserve with well maintained trails, or pop up to one of the two pools (the other was just out our front foo) or the fancier of the two restaurants. Apart from the resort's various buildings, the setting is remarkable. During our three days there we spotted three rainbows and were simultaneously warmed by the tropical sun and cooled by the mountain breezes. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

"Overpriced hotel in need or renovation!!!"
Wonderful view but a very basic hotel in desperate need of renovation and way over-priced. Hotel spead out over mountain side - vans needed to get from one area to another - they were prompt and very helpful. Staff was wonderful, bilingual and courteous. The rooms had no heat, carpet was in need of replacement. There was no dresser or closet and it […] would be nice to have a TP holder to prevent the roll from disappearing! Breakfast was adequate and well staffed, but I had expected more for the price. Most guests are part of tours and only stay for a night or two. We stayed for four nights as part of our anniversary holiday - great destination with lots to do, but dissapointing hotel. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Nice hotel for family."
The only downside to this hotel was the internet service. If you did manage to get onto the internet the server was constantly kicking you off. Other than the internet service, we thought the hotel was nice, dinner in the upscale restaurant was fantastic, but the service was very slow. Lunch and dinner in the casual restaurant wasn't anything special. There […] were a lot of young children at the hotel that made a lot of noise early in the morning and the hallways are not very soundproof. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Nice, memorable hotel"
This is a nice, memorable hotel. Major pluses are the great views, hiking trails and ziplines, nature guides, and on-site restaurants. The one major downside is that the staff can be overwhelmed by the large number of guests. As a result, the service is uneven and shoddy at times.Avis véridique Hotels.com
"great spot for anyone"
Loved it! Rooms are very comfortable, with beautiful views. Pools are nice. Food was very good. Night hike was fun! Shuttle service is very helpful, considering the steep mountain road. Staff is very professional, knowledgeable. Banana bread with chocolate chips was delicious! :) Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do the zipline....Avis véridique Expedia

"Great stay with a baby, missed the mark on details"
This was our first time traveling to Monteverde, and we brought our 10 month old baby with us, so we wanted a comfortable stay. El Establo is located on a beautiful property, only a 10 minute (bumpy) ride to the Monteverde reserve, and has a lot going for it but missed the mark on a few key things. PROS: Offered a clean pack n play for baby (we brought […] our own so we didn't need one) Friendly, helpful staff Beautiful views of the valley Comfortable mattress and soft bedding Soaking tub Large, tiled bathroom Balcony Grassy areas to let baby crawl around Delicious food at both restaurants (we primarily ate at Laggus) CONS: The overall con of El Establo is they have some luxury materials and beautiful furniture, but it is constructed poorly. For example, the shower glass doors were glued to the tile and the glue had oozed out of the seams. It looked bad. There was no toilet paper holder. The roll just sat on the floor. The carpet was not vacuumed and was very dated, along with the wooden furniture in the room. The grounds are very large, so you must call a shuttle to get from your room to the restaurant and anywhere else. It would have been nice to have a little more freedom and not be dependent on the staff to get back to your room (especially crucial when it is raining) We did enjoy our stay. As I said, the staff is so friendly and I didn't mind the outdated and poorly thought out rooms, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone ISO a luxury stay based on these cons. "close to destinations"
The hotel room was very noisy. You could hear every one as they passed by in the hallways (especially rolling suitcases). Poor ventilation: no airconditioners, the only windows that would open were in the bathroom that connected to the common hallways. No windows or doors to the outside with screens. No ceiling fans or anything.Avis véridique Hotels.com
"Great stay, just don't eat there!"
We had a great stay at El Establo. The staff were very helpful and the room was clean and comfortable. However, on our last night we ate in the restaurant. It was over priced and possibly the worst meal I have ever ordered. In saying that, the cocktails were great. happy hour is a must do!Avis véridique Hotels.com
"a little rustic but lovely"
When we first arrived we were put in a room all the way up the mountain with the wrong bed size. We were immediately switched to a beautiful room on a lower level. The service was wonderful when they were there but the front desk closes at 10 P.M. and there was no one around anywhere to accomodate any needs after ten until early morning. The man at […] the front desk was working very hard and was very nice but he was alone so it was difficult to accomodate everyones needs. It would have been great if breakfast started earlier (like all the other hotels we stayed at). Tours start early and the breakfast (although delicious) opened a few minutes before we were supposed to be picked up. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

We had a short and wonderful stay here. The room was high on a hill with the most amazing view; in fact, we decided to order room service and just watch the beautiful sunset over the countryside. "rats in the bed at El Establo"
we are retired Australians travelling the world, we have stayed in around 40 hotels this year alone. This El Establo was the worst place we have stayed. Apart from the noise, appliances not working, poor food and no coffee/tea making machine in room as promised in the brochure. When it came to sleeping, I pulled the top pillow from bed to find 5 BABY […] RODENTS curled up in the bed. We did not stay the intended 3 nights and the manager who was to speak with us in the morning was unavailable. "too many better options"
The hotel rooms were in a loud and had a large stone corridor/hallways where you could hear anyone and everything at all times of the day and night. You had to leave doors to outside closed as there were no screens on the doors to open them without letting insects in. There was no internet in the rooms and no service to get your luggage to or from your […] room, which was made difficult by the very spread out nature of the facility, not to mention the extreme steepness of the resort from back to front between the various buildings. You needed a car to get anywhere on the property unless you are in the front rooms. Rooms were very sterile and bland. This hotel was not worth what we paid. There are too many other options in this wonderful city from what we saw. This was not the place to be. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

"Hotel El Establo in MOnteverde, Costa Rica"
What a spectacular location - the property is set on a huge hill. Which is a gift and a curse - more on this in a bit. The Hotel is located in the town of Santa Elena - from which you get access to the myriad of activities focused on the Costa Rica Cloud Forests. We were able to stay for one day out of our week in Costa Rica and that was not enough. […] Though we did fill the time: The hotel offers its own zip-lining adventure - a lot of fun, run by a professional team that made the adventure really enjoyable. They took care with the participants that were a little wary. For the more adventurous, they made it worth while. Ronny and the team did a fantastic job. The team also took photos and videos of us zip lining -- so we could concentrate on the activity!. The property offers a night walk through the forests - with the hope that you get to see flora/fauna that comes out just after dusk. We were luck enough to spot several species of birds, lizards, frogs and insects. Spectacular night skies! So dark out there that the skies lit up with the stars. We were able to enjoy the spa - great massages! - and the pool. The restaurant on the hotel property, the Laggus was very good. We had an excellent dinner and the wine list (while limited) was good too. The service was impeccable, friendly and attentive. The rooms were rustic - but large. All the amenities for a modern hotel were provided. Lock safe was primitive - but functional. The accommodations had a "rustic lodge" feel and the beds were comfortable. I spent a good amount of time on the balcony in a rocking chair - great views, clean air, big skies and the sounds of the forest. what more would you ask for. The rooms could have been a little more plush - but we did not mind since we were there for only one night. If staying longer, would certainly be looking for more for the price. The buffet breakfast, while plentiful, was a little basic. Okay - the hill curse. The property is spread out across a steep hill - s Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

We stayed at suit 301 and it was an old room with floor carpets and torn blue curtains. The 2nd floor stairs were slippery and we numbed our head in the triangle like ceiling twice. "Hotel El Establo offers stunning views."
Hotel El Establo sits magnificently on the mountain hilltop. The setting is wonderful. The drive to the hotel is unbelievable. Looks beautiful from the outside, but now the interior details. The welcome mat was rude. The hotel is spread out, so walking to pool or restaurants was tough. If you have a rental car as we did, that helps. Parking is limited. […] The pre-scheduled tours will pick you up from the hotel for a day of fun. We opted to drive ourselves. The morning zip-lining tour, which is a "must do", does not return you to the hotel until after check out times and asking for an hour or two late check out seems to be a problem unlike most hotels in the states. A quick shower after the tour would have been nice. One night stay in Monte Verde is all you need to see it all. Love the area. We stayed in a beautiful deluxe room at the very top of the mountain. The views were spectacular, but the walls were paper thin. We could hear both neighbors easily and they were not being out of the ordinary...just laughing and talking at normal tones. The breakfast buffet was really good and the hostess provided excellent service. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com
"Resort in the Cloud Forrest"
We enjoyed El Establo very much. Rooms were lovely and grounds very well cared for. In addition there are trails through the canopy. We had an excellent guide on the night tour. The food was very good and the morning breakfast buffet was wonderful, including made to order omelets and pancakes. One of the two pools is lovely with a roof overhead but […] open sides, protecting the pool from rain and too much sun. The only unfortunate trait was how audible the TV in the next room was. I would not recommend staying at this hotel. The view is fantastic and that is it. "Our worst hotel experience in Costa Rica!"
Modern facility and clean, but terrible service. A former cattle farm, they treat guests like cattle, complete with branding! Must wear a plastic wrist band on property. No coffee in room. No internet service except in lobby and super expensive. Claimed room service, but no menus in rooms. Cannot direct dial calls from room phones. Huge property, but […] front desk and switchboard not open 24 hours. Buses full of tourists at breakfast and dinner buffets, creating stampedes. Should open earlier for breakfast for guests leaving on 7am tours, but despite food and staff ready, refused to serve us early. Workmen using power tools, hammering, and yelling all day near our room. Shouldn't put guests in buildings undergoing rennovation.
