"Un charme fou"Evalué par Yves S de "France" le 17 août 2011
Nous étions en famille dans ce condominion, dans une chambre un peu en retrait qui appartient à une famille américaine. La décoration était telle qu'on se sent chez soi très vite, très vintage hawaiien, avec des photos de famille, livres, albums photos... Un charme fou. Très bien équipé et ventilé, pas besoin de clim. Aucun stress, c'était parfait et accueillant.

"Away from the worries of daily life"
It's more of a condo complex with extras than a resort. The location is undeniably exquisite. It's a long drive from the airport, but once you're there, it's easy to settle in and not stray too far from the hotel in either direction but still find lots to do. There's no room service, the bed quality & linens are quite first class. The cleaning service […] is only every third day (not that we needed that much attention.) The bathroom is good, everything is quite clean. The kitchen is decent, but the quality of the silverware, knives and glassware is basically the kind of stuff I had when I just got out of college. (Clean up after yourselves, there are ants from time to time as this is a tropical location and we kept the windows open a lot.) We spread out and found it extremely spacious. The couch was comfy and great views from every window. We had every breakfast on the balcony. We were in building A - which was ocean front. The ocean is noisy, especially in the winter, so be prepared for the din. Even in the cool of the evening, we still kept the sliding door open for ventilation and snuggled into the bed. WiFi worked well. There's no TV, no newspaper delivery, so it was good to at least catch a little bit of what was going on in the world. The hot tub and pool was nice, though a little far away for some units. We used the coin laundry there as well to refresh our clothes. Hanalei was a short drive away with some good dining & groceries. Farmers market on Wednesdays. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Nice resort- Dont set your expectations too high"
Everything is expensive on this island, North shore even more than other parts. So knowing that- it still seems a bit overpriced for the quality of the resort. It was clean and well taken care of. No real complaints but not wowed by the place either. Would likely stay elsewhere next time I am there.Avis véridique Expedia
"wonderful place to stay"
We loved this place. Our apartment was roomy and light, well laid out, spotlessly clean, well equipped, staff friendly and accommodating. and something beautiful on all sides--the ocean on mountains. The lanai had an overhang and was wonderful to watch the waves. The only disappointment was the swimming pool, which is small and not heated, so often […] it was quite cold and uncomfortable to get into (though very refreshing). I wish the pool were even moderately heated. The pool was important because the ocean there is quite wild and although there is a small beach that is sheltered from the strongest currents, if one wants to swim., the pool is needed. And the hot tub, although wonderfully hot, is tiny (cannot fit more than 3 or 4). Also, the pool's location right next to the road with cars driving by is not pleasant though there is a hedge separating the two. The food at the restaurant on the premises was terrible. But that said, I would definitely go back to the Hanalei Colony. The rooms with ocean view or ocean front are the best and we were lucky enough to have one! We had worried about the location (you have to go over 5 one way bridges) but that proved not to be a problem at all. It is a short ride --15 minutes tops --to the nearest town (Hanalei) and the bay there is gorgeous and protected so good for swimming. This place is a winner. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com
"Honeymoon bliss for outdoorsy couple"
We spent 10 nights at HCR (well, with one exception when we were camping at Kalalau Beach). Highlights: Delightful staff (thank you Cissie and Stephen Steven?) for all your help and many answers to our questions). Serene location - we wanted to get away from it all. Conveniences of home - loved cooking eggs and making coffee, then sitting out on the […] lanai and watching the waves; were able to do (cheap) laundry during our long stay. AMAZINGLY comfortable bed. Conveniently close to Hanalei for surfing, kayaking, restaurants, groceries. Also conveniently close to gorgeous beaches and the Kalalau Trail - definitely one of the reasons we looked in that area. Be advised: it might rain, a lot. We were totally fine with the rain and had expected it. The noise from the wind at night was a bit of a problem and kept us awake most of the night twice in a row, but it was an unusual circumstance. Overall, I would love to stay here again and think it's wonderfully appropriate for couples looking for a quiet getaway or for families looking for a more spacious way to stay together near fun activities. "Just Wonderful!!"
Stayed here for just two nights & wish I would have stayed longer! Beautiful ocean view with a corner unit. Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen & beyond. Great multi-options for BBQing. Very warm & communal sort of vibe without being intrusive in any way. Unsurpassed beach-combing. Quiet, uber-comfortable beds. Watching a couple rainstorms […] roll in & out (stayed in December) from our Lanai was just awesome! Will stay here again for sure. Immaculate grounds & rooms. Well done guys!! "The Princeville alternative"
Why would you need fancy in paradise? If you want a fancy hotel, there's always Princeville. But if you want something that is a bit removed from glitz, Hanalei Colony is quiet, clean and unpretentious, with a glorious beach for walking or (cautious) swimming. Our 2 bedroom condo had a lot of louvered doors that separated the bedrooms from the living […] area. While this doesn't offer the best of privacy, it worked fine for us and our 38 yr old son who was traveling with us. Lovely ocean view from the lanai. There's a very good restaurant offering Mediterranean cuisine and a small coffee bar/art gallery on the premises so you don't have to drive back into Hanalei unless you want to. Any drawbacks? Well, remember, this place is quiet. So quiet that the restaurant and bar can close as early as 8:30, so have that nightcap a little earlier than usual and bring your laptop (free wi-fi) if you want to watch a movie-no TV in the rooms. "We will be back"
The rooms view from G3 was absolutely fantastic and the maintenance around the hotel grounds was beautiful. The BBQ pits were a nice way to cook our meals. The bathrooms could have been cleaner but not horrible and under the dresser hadn't been cleaned in a very long time (we dropped something under there & were a bit shocked.) However, overall, the […] spacious room and view of the beach was just so fantastic, it all balanced out. The quiet beach and sunrises are perfect and there are few places in the bay to boogie board. The location is definitely in the prettiest part of the island as we drove the whole island and is quiet unlike Poipu (too full of resorts) and there is lots of activities closeby to do (zip trekking, kayaking.) The rain missed us all week too but Princeville seemed to get a lot. Staff are friendly and the restaurant and lounge onsite are good too. The pool was quiet with lots of toys for the kids to play with but later it was easy to have the pool to ourselves. Get room G3 if possible, it is the best one. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Kauai North Shore relaxed gem."
This resort is low-key, relaxed and provides the perfect platform from which to experience the beautiful north shore of Kauai. If you are looking for big tv's, lavish bathrooms, room service, bustling activity and lots of restaurants, this is not your place. HCR is subtle, well-equipped and beautifully situated, it is an excellent place to stay.Avis véridique Expedia
"Perfect North shore location"
Great place if you are planning an intimate get away with your wife/husband or significant other. Great North shore location close to Tunnels beach and the Napali coast. We had unit H3 which had an incredible view from our suite. Overall, very nice. A note that wasn't obvious to us, this is not a typical hotel with daily room service. Also, no AC, it's […] not needed, but you need to keep the windows open at all times. Would definitely go back if we are back in Kauai. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

"Perfect spot for northern Kauai"
Very comfortable, clean and spacious accommodations, beautiful grounds. Hotel itself has one restaurant, everything else requires driving. Short drive to 'downtown' Hanalei with restaurants and some shops, and easy access to the North coast highlights, such as the Na'Pali coast, Ke'e and Tunnels beaches, Limahuli Garden.Avis véridique Hotels.com
"Some units are much nicer than others"
We started off very disappointed. Our "deluxe ocean view" suite was on the ground floor next to the parking lot, and we could see the ocean as a narrow strip across the lawn and in between other buildings. I would have rated that very poorly. Luckily, the manager was able to move us after 2 nights to a better location, upstairs, and closer to the ocean. […] The units are very nice and spacious; charming, in fact. It would have been very useful to have 2 full baths (there are 1.5) for the 4 of us. The pool is very small and completely enclosed - not what I expect at an ocean front hotel. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Outstanding North Shore Resort"
Our stay at HCR was idyllic. The unit was clean with flowers, candles and cookies to welcome us. It was spacious, bright, well-equipped and comfortable. The staff members were friendly and responsive. The view from our premium ocean front was spectacular. We shopped at the Tuesday Hanalei Farmer's Market and the fresh fish market and enjoyed many memorable […] meals at the condo. The nearby beaches are gorgeous, as other reviewers have shared. We saw every sunrise from the lanai. The waves broke continuously under the window. There was only one rainy day. Otherwise, the sun was bright with brief passing clouds bringing light showers. We loved being on the north shore and took day trips to visit the other sights on Kauai. We would definitely come back to Hanalei Colony Resort. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Romantic and secluded for honeymooners"
The perfect place for us! The condos are located in the secluded and romantic North Shore. We were 1 mile from Tunnels Beach (best snorkeling), 1 mile from Ha'ena Beach Park (great swimming and body surfing), and 2.5 miles from Ke'e Beach (sunset watching). Our room had an ocean view, which was a treat to wake up to everyday. There is a restaurant, […] small coffee/gift shop, and spa on site. We ate at the restaurant for the Tuesday night Luau, which was enjoyable. Kauai has a TON of wild chickens but there are a few cats on the property that keep the chickens away. You'll understand when you arrive how nice it is not to hearing crowing first thing in the morning. The condos don't have air-conditioning but you don't need it because of the ocean breezes. The kitchen is equipped for basic cooking, and includes a microwave. We cooked breakfast and a few lunches at the condo to save money. There is no T.V. or telephone -- but why would you want one on vacation? The map at the front desk was the best map for the island. There is a beach but it is not swimmable. No worries, though, because there are excellent beaches up the road. A great place! Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Not exactly what we thought it would be, but good"
My impression from the way it was advertised was that it was way more secluded than it actually was. Beach is pretty, but views from the deluxe rooms are not all what they look like in the photos. Also, you can really hear the other guests, both in their rooms and as they walk around on the deck outside, although the wind, rain and waves helps drown […] out people noises. Cute cats roaming the premises and they keep the chickens away. Staff is really friendly and helpful. Hot tub was broken during our stay, which was a bummer. Still, better than staying at a mega resort and seems to be the best peaceful and comfortable option on the north shore. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Unplugged and unspoiled"
The staff were very accommodating and helped us with activities and made our stay pleasurable. We had a great view and enjoyed just sitting and enjoying the peace and solitude. We enjoyed not having a phone or television in the room. It was nice to be "unplugged". The kitchen was well equipped and we had many delightful meals sitting on the lanai.Avis véridique Expedia
"Great View!"
Beautiful, peaceful location as close to the Kalalau trail that you can get. Walk out your lanai to the sea. Breathtaking views of the ocean and short walk to fdown the beach for abulous snorkling. Little windy in the winter months although still great. Even though facility is older the room was great and clean.Avis véridique Hotels.com
"Rain in paradise"
It rained at lot during our stay -- 36 inches in the 24 hours before our arrival. More rain arrived during our stay. but nowhere near the torrent before our arrival. The hotel is at the end of the road, susceptible to landslides from saturated soil, high waters affecting bridges and fords of normally small streams. In addition to road closures, we […] experienced electrical failures. Telephone poles are no match for a lot of rain. There were no generators at the hotel. Yet even experiencing these problems, we loved the peace and quiet. The setting is exquisite -- near the site for the movie "South Pacific -- and the rooms were fabulous. The restaurant next door was top quality -- ranked by some as the best on the island. If you are worried about catching a flight, you might want to spend the prior night closer to the airport. We would return in a heart-beat. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"Quiet paradise"
Hanalei Colony Resort is a gem! Situated close to the end of Kauai's only road is the ideal starting point for exploring the unspoiled and breathtaking north coast. Also it is directly on the ocean, although the beach is not swimmable in the winter season. The powerful waves make for a view nevertheless! The town of Hanalei, about two miles away, is […] very small but provides for good restaurants and other useful services: taxi, post office, ATM, bike rental, surf school, grocery store, and a bus that connects to Lihue, where the airport is. A car is however needed on Kauai in general, and especially if you're staying at the Hanalei Colony Resort, which is otherwise rather isolated. The staff is extremely kind and helpful and provides excellent service! Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

Not recommended for the business traveler - no phone, no TV, but wireless internet. Rooms are large, clean, and comfortable. Pool, Hot tub, and other shared areas keep in great condition. Staff is friendly and professional. You can not swim at the beach itself, but you can sunbath, and watching the sun come up is beyond expression. "Great hideout, so much of natures charm. Relaxing"
HCR is about 10 minutes from Hanalei town, great place to relax, quiet and peaceful with the nature's soothing tranquility. The property is on the beach, we had a great room (B2) with a nice view of the ocean and the garden. The morning sunrise at the backdrop was fantastic. During this time of the year (mid/January) Hanalei experience high seas as […] a result the from northern winds, but there is always miles of golden sandy beaches to walk. We walked every day in the mornings and evenings. In the evenings the sky is amazing! With no illumination around the stars are out to surprise you !! There were a few days when the wind was zero and the next morning sea was like a pool with no waves. We took the opportunity and took a snorkel tour. There were a variety of corals and tropical fish. The water was warm, and the visibility was about 15 meters. Some areas are for experienced snorkelers, suggest going on a guided tour. The decor of the rooms had a nice Hawaiian taste, specious and clean. The Spa and the Mediterranean restaurant was excellent, although just one thing that we thought the "Ahi (Maguro) Sashimi" could be better. The Spa and was great, we used the room on the beach and it was relaxing. We'd like to visit again. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Hotels.com

The location and the view from the room is excellent. I really enjoyed the view from the room and sound of waves. The room was spacious and comfortable bed. "Refreshing. Island Treasure. Beautiful Experience"
We're so glad we selected Hanalei Colony Resort for our wedding/family reunion. The drive from the airport provided breathtaking scenery. We arrived Nov. 14th to a beautiful arranged condo, with an amazing view of the ocean. Our wedding coordinator, Shentel thought of everything. The first night we ate at the Mediterranean Gourmet. Their menu is fresh […] and grown locally. We enjoyed the atmosphere and live music. Wedding day I was surprised with a gift certificate from a thoughtful friend and enjoyed a relaxing massage at the resorts spa. Just what I needed to start the day! It rained most of the day and we were not able to have the ceremony on the beach as planned. Our wedding was still perfect! "Remote."
This resort is close to the "end of the road" on the North Shore of Kauai. It is in a remote location which took about 90 minutes to reach from the airport in Lihue along a narrow road with numerous one-lane bridges. We arrived at night in the middle of a rain storm so needless to say the drive was stressful. However, once we arrived we found the service […] to be exceptional; the staff want to help you to feel at home and it has a very folksy feel. They provide housekeeping every 3 days. The condos are older (1969) but well maintained. We also enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi as well as a couples massage in the spa. On our departure, we were informed that one of the bridges beyond Hanalei might be closed due to high water/flooding conditions and that "they don't really monitor the other bridges" so those might also not be safe. However, we did make it back to civilization. If you are looking for an adventure and a place that is truly out of the way, strongly recommend. The North Shore of Kauai is gorgeous and worth seeing but remote from other resort areas of the island. Would definitely *not* recommend making this your first stop on arriving to the island especially if taking a flight that arrives in the later afternoon or evening (i.e. flying from the mainland U.S.). Better to do the drive in daylight so you can experience the scenery and not feel rushed to get there. Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia

"The Kauai worth coming back to"
We had no idea what to think of the Hanalei Colony Resort before we showed up, but when it was time to leave, we didn't want to. I have no idea when we'll return to Hawaii, but when my wife said that we could try another place when I said we'd stop first at a grocery store for food (to cook in the kitchen or onsite grill), I set my foot down and told […] her that it was either HCR or nowhere on Kauai. This was after 2 nights at a spa resort in the Poipu area. What did I not like about HCR? It's quite a drive away from quite a lot. What did I like about HCR? It's quite a drive away from quite a lot. Hanalei is about a 15 minute drive, which provides a nice location for a quiet small town. Ke'e beach is about a 15 minute drive in the other direction, and is an ideal location for sunsets. The condos are large, and having 2 bathrooms were great. But the best part is that everyone at HCR and in the surrounding area are the nicest people I've met (plus, they're real, unlike those I've dealt with in the service industry elsewhere in Hawaii). We loved Java Kai's for breakfast & coffee (in Hanalei), though we did enjoy every place we ate. We also loved activities at the Princeville Ranch. Every beach we found in the area was great. We sampled offerings from the onsite restaurant, spa, and art shop/coffee shop. Each was great! Lisez la suiteAvis véridique Expedia
"Just what we were hoping for to get away"
This is my favorite vacation destination as of right now. Pro's: Quiet Lovely Fairly remote Beach access/beach views Privacy Comfort Family-friendly Cons: Limited local services This was just the place we needed to escape for awhile without having to pack a tent and go trekking. The resort is located almost at the end of the north road on Kauai. […] It took about an hour to drive up from Lihue. The resort is a handful of four-plex buildings. 2 units on top, 2 below. Our unit was a lower unit with a beach view off the lanai. It appears that all units have some beach view; there are a handful that are right on the beach, whereas others are are angled away from it. There is a restaurant/bar and a coffee bar in a building just across the yard and they host a variety of mixers and cocktail parties for people staying at the resort. The restaurant theme is Mediterranean and it also serves excellent local fish. The saffron rice appetizer was fantastic! This is a timeshare type of resort so while we were here there was a mix of vacationers and owners in residence for the winter. Everyone was friendly and polite and seemed relaxed. The pool area is beautiful and includes a large seating area with grills available for those who may want to entertain a large group. The resort is about 10 minutes out of Hanalei and about 6 minutes before the end of the road and Ke'e beach. The resort is situated right on the beach; about 25 feet from our front door. You can either drive or walk the beach for several miles. We snorkeled about 100 yards down the beach, around the point, and it was great water. There are no tv's or telephones in these units. There is wi-fi available if you must. This was a perfect place to relax, sit back, and explore the north side of the island while enjoying the convenience of a full kitchen and beautifully furnished apartment.
