Hotel Stay Mont Royal - Montréal

My daughter and I found ourselves needing to make a week long trip to Montreal for a sudden appointment. We found the Hotel Stay on Hotels.com and decided to book there based on price and location. When we first entered the hotel and up the 2 steep flights of stairs, we didn't really know what we got ourselves into. Then we were given our room keys […] and the room was smaller than what we were expecting. This is the only thing that could be contrived as the least bit negative. By the end of our stay, our quaint quarters really felt like home. The family owned staff, despite a less than prolific understanding of English, were fantastic! We were treated very well and this was the best staff of any hotel that I had ever stayed at. The location is top notched being located at a corner that faces a major Metro station with very easy access to all parts of the city. There are several fantastic eateries within a quick walk from Hotel Stay. Our favorite was Mont Royal Hot Dog that has a huge menu including serving up a delicious smoked meat pizza. A drug store, open air produce market and most anything you could possibly want, is right there. We are planning on a more relaxed return to Montreal next summer and we will be staying once again at Hotel Stay. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to experience the flavor of Montreal. Pros: location, price, accessibility, free breakfast, sink in the room. Cons: communal shower and toilet, all rooms exterior so if you're a light sleeper , this hotel not for you. Steep stairs to the reception

Hotel Stay Mont Royal is great for travelers on a budget. It is situated in a good area and extremely close to the Metro. Within walking distance is Rue Denis with great shopping and eating as well as Mont Royal. The room was clean but very basic. There are shared bathrooms which are quite small and a basin in the room for washing hands, brushing teeth […] etc. This hotel is exactly what you pay for. Wonderful location, great place for those who value convenience and neighborhood vibe amenities. Good for people who speak Spanish!

Exactly where we wanted to be in Montreal on the plateau, so perfect for us, and the price is right. It's not the Fairmont - but it's cute, clean and cheap and works for showering and sleeping.

My girlfriend and I had a very pleasant stay here. No private bathrooms but each room has a sink. The breakfast is good and the rooms are very modern and clean. For the price it is more than worth it. Because it is small, there is often no one at the desk. I highly recommend phoning an hour before you arrive to tell them what time you would like them […] there to welcome you and let you in. With the low price of this hotel, it is a great deal! The workers at the hotel are more than willing to help you out. The rooms were cute and cozy, decorated with classic french style. The only downside was the shower and bathroom were outside the room, but no worries because there was never a line an definitely not a far walk from the bedroom. I couldn't […] get over the location. From little boutiques, tapas bars, a cupcake shop as well as other cute cafes, this was the perfect location (which wasn't too touristy either. Absolutely no souvenir or tourist shops on Mont Royal Avenue, which was refreshing to see). It was nice to wake up in the morning, grab a croissant, fruit, and juice box and head out for a busy day in the city. I felt completely safe. As a resident at Hotel Stay, I was given a key for my room, as well as one to enter the hotel, very secure! It was also nice to have a 24 hour cafe under the hotel--you never no when you'll need a caffeine boost!! Overall, great hotel for someone who is just looking for the basics in a friendly and safe hotel. The hotel is really a hostel. The overall stay was really great - the room was small, but comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. The only two complaints are that when you first enter the place, there is a long staircase to the "lobby," so if you have a big bag, it may be difficult to get it up. Also, the shower and toilet rooms are absolutely tiny. […] But they were clean and you never had to wait for it. Breakfast was included - fruit, brownie bites, yogurt, tea, coffee, croissants, cinnamon rolls, etc. You should know a little French because the person working at the desk did not speak any English. The location was really great. Mont Royal is a very lively street with many cafes, shops, and lots of people around. The hotel was directly across from the Metro, which was really convenient. The good: great location, subway stop next door so you can get anywhere in towwn in minutes; closest hotel to climbing Mont-Royal; and dozens of reasonable restaurants within two blocks. If you are with yourself it's an option to go and stay there but I do not suggest it for families. Rooms are small, bathrooms are shared. The location is good, it's in front of a metro station and has access to a lot of restaurants. Personals are friendly.

the hotel is difficult to gain access to - as per an earlier reviewer - entrance door is locked and despite ringing the bell numerous times, no one opened it - was just lucky that some happened to leave. Also you are required to pay a security/incidentals deposit and sign a contract written only in French - the man at the desk was very pleasant and […] helpful but only spoke a smattering of both French and English. Room was clean and pleasant - fairly quiet too and a good location. Breakfast was supposed to be at 8.30am but was all put out before 7.45 with a good selection of coffee, juice, pastries, fruit and yoghurt. My only problem was that there was not a staff member to be seen, nor a bell to get their attention when I had to leave at 8am and therefore was not able to get my deposit back (as I had a flight to catch) I await their response to my email. This is a good hotel if one doesn't expect more than a place to sleep. The room was basic but adequate. The shared bathroom was a bit inconvenient. The continental breakfast was mediocre but it would have been shame not to have tried some of Montreal's great restaurants for breakfast anyway. In fact, there ws a wonderful crepe place right across the […] street. The hotel is very convenently located next to the Mont-Royal metro station. The neighborhood (The Plateau/Parc LaFontaine) is a funky location with nice shops, restaurants and bars. This hotel is wonderful for the independent traveler. Rooms have sinks but share bathrooms - not a problem, never had to wait. The proprietors are attentive and helpful. Very clean rooms. Nice continental breakfast available. Best thing is the location - just steps from the Mont Royal metro stop.

The owners do not speak much english so it was hard to communicate. They were very nice and accommodating but this hotel said it has free wifi and yet we could NOT get connected at all to it. Rooms were very clean you do have to share a bathroom with all other guests as well as a shower. They were very clean and to be honest all was okay other than […] the fact that it was SO HOT in our room we could not sleep at all. There is a very small fan and the windows do not open hardly at all. The location is good for walking around but noisy at night on the weekends but you are right next to the metro and the parking lot we were able to part in was cheap and close enough that it was not an issue. I've tried various budget hotels in Montreal, and this is by far the best overall. The location is great - metro next door, bus to airport two metro stops away, great night and day life all around you. Some other reviewers have suggested that the staff are not helpful, or have poor language skills. I found the staff really good - positive and helpful. […] Their English and French may be limited, but more than adequate for the sort of conversation you want! This is not the sort of hotel where there is continual and attentive service - but for me this was not a problem at all. My room was carefully serviced each day. The toilets and showers were cleaned regularly and efficiently. I didn't want any more service. The room was furnished throughout with IKEA units. These were in pretty good repair. Cable TV was available in the room. The washbasin had ample hot and cold water. There are no en-suite rooms - but seriously, what do you expect at this price? Wifi internet (fast and reliable) is available at no charge. You can also log on to the unsecured network from the café downstairs if you want. A free self-service breakfast is available each morning. In theory, this is only from 0800 to 1000. In practice, I found the food was put out by 0715 and the drinks machine switched to free dispense at the same time. Breakfast is basic - but if good quality coffee or hot chocolate, along with croissants and a couple of other types of pastry, as well as yoghurt and apples/bananas, is enough for you you can eat what you want. I had enough each morning to last me through to the early evening, and I tended to take the food and drink back to my room and eat there while catching up on email etc. I has a noisy neighbour one evening, and the street noise is inevitably present. I did have a good sleep on each of the four nights I stayed. Overall, I think the Hotel Stay Mont Royal offered outstanding value. As described on the package - basic, clean, comfortable. Bed was very good. Showers and shared washrooms clean. Owners very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting cheap and cheerful accommodation.

this is a charming place. if you don't mind the shared bathroom part, it's a WONDERFUL budget option!

Staff was really super friendly and nice to me. I would definately choose to stay at this hotel again for my next visit to Montreal.

The double bed was quite small, and sort of a cheap. Friendly staff, but the problem they did not speak English nor french, which was kind of weird as Montreal is a french speaking area. Overall it's near the main road for cafe and resto.

It's not really a so-called "hotel" but rather somewhat like an affordable B&B. Just across the street of the metro station (Station Mont-Royal). Superb service, staff is very friendly and helpful. This hotel is not for people with disabilities--there is no elevator, and it's tough to get luggage up the steep stairs. But if you are active, and you don't mind sharing a bathroom, it is a terrific place to stay in Montreal. The location was wonderful. Front desk was helpful. room was OK nothing special but it does have a fridge which is good. Only disadvantage was the shared washroom at hallway and no control on the heating system which becomes pretty warm at night making you sweat.

The location was great, the service was great, the price was great. Rooms are on the small side but that didn't bother me because i just wanted a comfy place to sleep. I will be going back.

It is a good hotel but it is a bit annyiong that the staff doesnt speak any english at all, but spanish!! (they are still very friendly trying to help you!!). But it is just over a street from the subway and it is clean. Small showers that you have to share and the breakfast is'nt something you would pay for. I was not "buzzed" in for entry for about 10 minutes. I started to panic! Finally let in, went to room, which was fine. The women's bathroom was out of order?! Had to share men's single toilet which was smaller than a closet and shared amongst 10 other rooms!!

did not like parking facilities parked elswhere room was clean ,host was polite, the even feed us small breakfeast with fruit,yogurt,croisant and fresh coffee every morning very nice

It's not exactly downtown but Mont Royal also has its own shopping and sight seeing stuff. You could go to the mountain and have a good view of the whole city; or walk down Rue Mont Royal or Rue St Denis for some shopping. Across from the hotel is the metro station, so you could go anywhere you want to and still get back to the hotel conveniently. The […] rooms are small and the washrooms are not located in the rooms, but they keep everything clean all the time so I'm not complaining. You get what you pay for. Great budget hotel for budget travellers. Great place if you're just looking for a place to sleep and a shower. The location is amazing so you'll want to be out and about anyway. Not the Ritz so you'll have to be patient on the service.

Me and my fiancee spent 4 days in the Hotel Stay Mont Royal. We loved the place. The room was really clean and very spacious. It looked like all furniture was new and it had a fresh coat of paint and new carpet. We were a little uneasy about how the sharing a bathroom situation would be, but each floor only has 3 units that share 1 masc + 1 fem bathroom […] and 1+1 showers. Neither me nor my Fiancee had to wait one extra min to use the facilities. The location is also great. the hotel is surronded by cafes and restaurants. The crossing road is St. Dennis which is the "bohemian" part of town, with many restaurants and night life. The subway is steps away. Also there is a bike rental right in front of the hotel. The staff was really friendly and help us with a lot of questions about the town. We recommend it to everyone going to Montreal. Lisez la suite

We loved our week-long stay at Stay Mont Royal. This hotel is not for the needy. It is in a fun, safe, friendly neighborhood that is alive with a young crowd at all hours. Directly across their is the metro, restaurants, pharmacy, and more. If you like to be in the middle of the fun, or just like the sounds of the city, like we do, it was a great location. […] It is very clean. We saw them clean it top to bottom every day. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The small, simple, and comfortable room reminded us of traveling in Europe. We never once had to wait for the restroom or the shower. Which again were small but clean. The continental breakfast is simple but a good start of coffee, croissants, juice, yogurt, and fruit. Their's a computer with internet conveniently available if you are traveling without. In summary, it could be seen as noisy, not very private, and not catering. But that is from a certain type of person who should look for a fancier hotel. You know who you are. This was fantastic! The location is directly across the street from the Metro and above a 24hr Cafe with wifi. The Mont-Royal Plateau are is charming with load of shops, restaurants and drinking places.The employees were wonderful and friendly. They dont bother you. Stairs are a challenge only lugging up heavy luggage. Im going back!

You had to press a button to enter the building before you got your key which provided a great secure feeling for me. The desk people were friendly, helpful, and spoke english. Also the room was exactly like it was on the picture on the hotels.com website, which never happens. The free breakfest in the morning was cool even though the room it was in […] was small but it was great for grabbing to go. I didn't have problems with the stairs and the room had a nice view. I loved how close it was to the metro station and how there was a good scene of food and stores around it. Also the metro was so easy to use. We drove up to Canada from Vermont but left the car in a parking garage that charged a price every 24hours. Its hard to park around this hotel because the parking is reserved for the residents of the city and the other street parking is metered. Parking is the only down side if you dont want to spend money or want to park close by the hotel. Next time I would probably take a bus to Montreal. This was one of the greatest experiences I had with a hotel and the surrounding city. Also, if you need any information on the city go to one of the information centers with the big question mark (one is near the PEEL station) and the people there will give you great info on things to see and youll get free maps! I found the Hotel Stay in Montreal to be a fantastic experience. The staff were incredibly polite and accommodating. We did not speak French, and the staff did their best to help us understand, this was greatly appreciated. Each day the bed was made/sheets changed for us and new hand towels laid out. The fact that the bathroom/shower was upstairs was […] never a problem, I never had to wait for the shower or bathroom which is a great thing. I did not see a hairdryer, nor an iron or ironing board in the room, but did not ask the staff if they provided one. Overall, the hotel as well as the neighborhood were fantastic and exciting, there were many different things to do and the staff at the hotel were very helpful. We had a wonderful time in Montreal at the International Jazz Festival 2010. Could not have asked for better care and hospitality from the hotel staff. I would most definitely stay there again if I were looking for quality at an affordable. Can't beat the price!! The location of the hotel was perfect; conveniently location right next to a metro stop. […] Practically in the back door. And very close to many restaurants and shops. I was in Montreal for 2 days to see the laugh festival. Our hotel was in a great location in downtown Montreal and we walked to the festival events. There were great food choices nearby and the staff were very helpful. This is a great hotel for student travelers and couples. If you are looking for Hilton quality this isn't it. Pros: --GREAT location next to Mont Royal station and in walking of distance of lots of sights and restaurants --Good price (better than a hostel for two) --Neat and clean room --Breakfast Cons: --Air conditioner would blow the fuse every and room would get very hot (90F outside) --The person at reception refused to switch the fuse off and on to restart […] the lights/air conditioning/TV in our room, until another guest complained. --No one apparently in charge of hotel at night All in all, a good experience, except for the heat and the sort of apathetic staff person.
