"NOT cost effective"
The fees and taxes on the fees for 3 days cost us more than the rental of a brand new BMW for the week! Ridiculous! The staff was excellent, with the exception of our last night (a Monday)...who ever was at the check in desk handled 'being alone' extremely well, considering...considering he also had to manage the return of our cars to the garage. "A memorable experience"
First, we read most of the reviews. We did our homework and determined that for the space, location, and amenities this hotel offered the best value. Based on reviewers recommendations we requested a room "off street", which true to others comments faced the internal courtyard. No big deal as we were not in the room often enough to need a view. The […] room was extremely quiet and the white noise from the exhaust system (which works wonderfully well) masked any minor irritances that may have occured. The layout of the room works well for muffling hallway noise as the bathroom is located on the hallway wall and there is a short interior hall where the main closet is that dissipated noise greatly.The interior closet was enormous (by hotel standards) and there are three drawers and 2 doored shelves in the entertainment console for personal storage. With all of the available storage we were able to put away our bags which helped keep the room neat and tidy. The housekeeping staff was efficient and even left thank you notes for our daily tips. Hotel staff was generally pleasant and helpful if needed but tended to not be overly gracious... maybe we were there so long they started treating us like regulars. While I do not generally need or want the staff to be fawning, it did seem a little strange that I had to seek them out rather than the opposite. The location was perfect. "Great hotel in the heart of Union Square!"
The number one selling point for Villa Florence is its location - just half a block from Union Square in one direction and a block away from public transportation in the other direction (BART, Muni and the Cable Car turnaround) - making it incredibly easy to get around the city and to/from SFO or OAK airports. The neighborhood felt safe to walk around […] both day and night, and there is lots of shopping and restaurants/bars within walking distance. The hotel staff were especially polite, friendly and helpful, providing recommendations for restaurants and the best way to get day-of Giants baseball tickets. Although the rooms are slightly dated with some wear, they were clean and extremely comfortable. Our room faced out to Powell St. and we had no problem with the noise at night. Location. Location. Location. We stayed at this hotel to be able to jump on the public transportation and get to a Giant's game. The location is perfect, the hotel is charming, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. It's an older hotel and the bathroom was a bit cramped but great value for the $$. Loved the location. "A little work to earn top score"
While the location of the Villa is great, just half a block from Union Square, and the staff (especially Daniel) was very helpful and knowledgeable about the surroundings, the property itself was not all that it could have been. Upon check in we learned that at Honda CRV is considered and oversized vehicle and would be charged a surcharge for valet […] parking ($58/night), you can park yourself one block away for $34/day. When we got to the room there were only two towels, the telephone did not work, and the bathroom door would not close. All things we were able to deal with but not what I expected from this hotel. The rooms a older but quaint in that San Francisco style. I may stay here again just because of the great location, but I will look around to see if I can find a better property at a comparable rate. The hotel was nice enough, but I wouldn't stay here again. Pros: it was very clean; comfy; DVD players in room; friendly staff; location, right on Powell street wite the best shopping and food in SF all within walking distance. I let the front desk know on our way out for the day and the girl said she would have maintenance fix it. That never happened. The room was small. Late night room service, namely the pizza, was horrid, literally the worst pizza I have ever had (it's my favorite food and I have had a lot of it). Ask for a view if you want one, otherwise you may be looking at the white brick wall of the building next door. Overall, or stay was not bad. "Nice boutique hotel"

""Classic" hotel in the heart of Union Square"
The staff at Villa Florence went out of their way to be accommodating and helpful for my wife and I. We were given the opportunity to select which side of the building we would like to be located. We selected Powell Street, and I will say that if you are a light sleeper, you may want to choose a different side. The hotel in general and room were clean. […] The room was small but not cramped, as there was plenty of room to spread out our suitcases, but not a lot of extra room. Powell Street has a trolley line, which is increases the convenience factor of the Florence, but it also adds noise into the rooms on that side of the building. It wasn't a big deal for us because the window unit fan was enough to mask the noise, but again, be aware. Being right in Union Square, there were quite a number of bars, restaurants, and shops nearby. If going to Fisherman's Wharf is your plan, you can catch one of the trolleys (there may be a lengthy line depending on time of day ), walk (up a big hill and then back down to the water), or catch a cab (fare will be in the high single digits). If you fly into San Francisco airport, arrange a shuttle to the hotel, as taxis are expensive. This is a great location in the heart of union square. Lots of shopping nearby! Easy access to streetcars and hop on hop off bus tour pick ups. China town is within walking distance. We had a street view room, and therefore there was quite a lot of noise at night (people playing drums on empty containers and lots of yelling in the streets late at night). The Villa Florence is a real oasis right in the heart of the Union Square area of San Francisco with easy access to restaurants, night life and transport to all areas of the city. The lobby area is very attractive and although we didn't use the cafe/bar or restaurant they seemed very popular indeed. We were offered a room at the front or one at the […] back near the lift - we chose the former which proved to be a mistake as Powell Street did not quieten down all night. We asked to be moved and were then given a wonderfully quiet and comfortable room in the centre of the hotel where we had two blissfully peaceful nights. The room was well quipped and furnished with an enormous flat screen TV. Altogether if you want a peaceful, grown-up hotel in the heart of everything at a reasonable price you really couldn't choose better than the Villa Florence as long as you keep away from the road! I was charged an "administration fee." I was told that it was for the wifi. I like having the option of choosing the services I pay extra for! If I don't use it, I don't pay for it! "Villa Florence in December"
Every December, sometime before Christmas, my wife and I make a trip to San Francisco to shop, see a show, and spend the night. We have stayed at many hotels on/around Union Square and this is a fine example of an older hotel being maintained well. We enjoyed the location immensely. Easy parking is available at the Ellis/O'Farrell garage half a block […] away. We recommend this hotel. "Great hotel, one bad stay"
We really like this hotel - this was our second stay there because our first stay was so great, however, this trip was a little different, in a not so good way. The first strike: when we checked in and first arrived in our room, we noticed that our bed linens were a bit soiled (it looked like someone spilled a little food grease on the sheets or something […] and didn't bother to change them because the bed was already made). The second strike: the water had to be shut off due to an emergency plumbing issue the morning that we were checking out. I know it's not the hotel's fault, but we were unable to take showers on the day of our departure. It was uncomfortable to have to sit on a plane unshowered. We were comped a couple of bottles of water to brush our teeth and one of the $15/day charges for internet... It just didn't feel like the hotel staff realized what an inconvenience it was - we didn't have the time to wait around for the water to come back on because we had to leave...
