"Ageing (somewhat gracefully) in a great location"
I did enjoy my stay at the Chancellor Hotel recently when in town for a conference. The location was great - it's in the Union Square area and the Hyde-Powell cable car runs right next to it, and it was an easy 10 min walk to the conference center. Also it's right next to Sears Fine Foods which is a great place for breakfast, and of course lots of shopping […] in the area. The staff were great, and efficient. I liked that they provided cold water (flavored with lemon or cucumber) in the lobby, as well as cookies. Coffee and tea are also available in the lobby. The hotel itself is old but fairly well-maintained: the rooms are small but comfortable, although my queen sized bed was a too firm for my liking and a bit small for 2 to share. There is also no air-conditioning in the room which got a little uncomfortable on the warmer days during our stay. That said, it provided overall good value for a great location. The Chancellor had everything we needed, at a reasonable rate. The staff were so cordial and helpful, it made us feel like true guests. The small touches made a big difference in comfort factor - specialty pillows courtesy of the hotel, bath salts and rubber ducky (!) in the bathroom, a jar of hard candies by the ice bucket... "Loved staying here"
My sister and I stayed here for two nights during a short leisure trip. I wanted a non-chain hotel at a fair price in Union Square, and was delighted to have all of those criteria met in this hotel. When we arrived, I was happy to find that they had accommodated my request of a high floor, and a room with a view of the square. The beds are not *exceedingly* […] comfortable, but absolutely acceptable, and the pillows are great. You will not find supreme luxuries in the rooms, but that was exactly what I had expected at the great price we paid to stay there. The rooms are very newly renovated, but maintain an historic feel. There was a mini fridge, a good-sized safe, flat-screen TV with HBO, and on-demand movies, a little jar of hard candies, and a ***walk-in*** closet!!! My sister and I were THRILLED. Bottom line: I'd *highly* recommend this hotel to anyone with discriminating taste on a budget after the holidays. I had a pleasant stay here. The room was clean and very convenient location. Street noise was not a problem (was on 14th floor). I could hear the alarm clock in the next room, so if you had loud neighbours the thin walls might be a problem, but during my stay the noise level was fine. The room was a good size, very clean, good atmosphere, and the free […] wifi was an ok speed. Free breakfast would have made it a perfect place to come back to, but at least water & coffee is 24/7 - which is great - and you can just grab a cookie in the morning. I did pay for breakfast 1 morning ($15 with tax & tip) and the food was excellent, but knowing some other places have free breakfast for the same rate I might try that next time. This hotel is great. The location couldn't be better - right off Union Square so close to many attractions and right by a tram stop. I didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on breakfast, but free coffee and snacks are provided. Free Wireless internet. My room was clean, comfortable and quiet. This is an older hotel (about 100 years old). The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The hotel reminded me of European hotels with very small elevators, hallways, rooms, and bathrooms. They get you with the good location and low price. The pictures are misleading. The hotel is very rundown and they get you on parking. There is no self parking to speak of so you pretty much have to do the $50/night valet. Great location with a peak of a view of the Union Square Christmas tree out my window. Clean room, good lighting, small bathroom with excellent amenities and very clean, umbrella in room, two suitcase stands, two chairs plus a desk chair, refrigerator, and a dish of candy on the side table. Plenty of good pillows and an extra blanket in the room. The […] hairdryer did not work, but within 5 minutes of my call to the front desk a new one was delivered. Valet parking was exactly as advertised; I called ahead and had no wait at all. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. And the apples and cookies were a welcome treat at the end of the day. I booked the parking package, and felt it was an excellent value, even with the added $11 for valet service. Well worth the price, and truly a bargain for this location! Fabulous small hotel! Very clean and comfortable, courteous service. It took only minutes to walk to my conference, and the included parking package was wonderful-I never used the car but it was easy to get to and get a few things out of I had forgotten. You need a larger bar area because the hotel is a nice place to relax before and after each day. Nice and cozy. I stayed at this hotel at the recommendation of a colleague. I enjoy hotels with character, but the rooms I were put in had extremely small bathrooms (with very limited counter space. The first room I was placed in had a fire door that opened into my door, making the entryway not large enough and the second room (since I asked to be moved) had open […] windows onto a fire escape. Just one small block north of the Union Square. Public transportation is easy. Cable car is right outside the hotel. BART and buses are 4 blocks south on Market St. The hotel sells 1 or 3 days muni passes. The lobby is small but lovely. Friendly staff. Free coffee and tea in the lobby. Rooms are not big but sufficient for a business trip. The bed is […] clean and comfy. The bath room provides bath salt and a cute little rubber duckie! The shower water pressure is low, just like many other hotels. Wi-fi is free (yay!) but the signal is weak (might be room dependent).
