Usher Hall history
Usher Hall began as a dream of one Andrew Usher, a local whisky distiller who longed for a magnificent concert hall in Edinburgh. He donated £100,000 to fund the construction and, after years of bidding and hard work, it finally opened in 1914. It was stunning for its time – and still is today – because of the reinforced concrete construction that allowed for curved walls with heightened acoustics.
Throughout the decades, this concert hall hosted a range of incredible performances and events, including the Vienna Philharmonic in 1947 and the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972. Despite its use, upkeep was lacking, as shown when a piece of plaster fell from the roof in 1996. In response, Usher Hall underwent extensive renovations that began more than a decade later, in 2007. It reopened in 2009 and continues to wow audiences.
