Conveniently situated budget hotel
This is a clean budget hotel with a TV, fridge, comfy bed, reasonably priced with a subway station just across the road. Sadly there was no microwave, coffee maker and it could be a bit noisy with road traffic. Eateries just across the road.

Do not book this property. Hotel 21 Nyc is no longer a hotel as it has become an immigrant house. I arrived at the hotel and figured I could not check-in. There was no hotel personnel, and Expedia was not helpful. It was a nightmare not knowing where to stay that night. Expedia sent me this email. "Unfortunately, after multiple tries, we weren't able to obtain an approval from the property manager to waive the cancellation fee. This means the current rules and restrictions for your booking apply, and a refund can't be granted."

This was not a real hotel. It was converted to a shelter and they redirected me to a different hotel I did not book, having to walk 15 minutes out. That hotel was very filthy and could not sleep more than one night. I book a new stay after 24 hours. They ask for cash deposit which is very sketch to me, and was hesitant on letting me get a photocopy of my receipt. This is a fraudulent listing, it's not the hotel in the photos and you will not stay here. Expedia needs to remove this.

I showed up and they said the hotel is shut down and did not have a room for me. They claimed there was a leak, but elsewhere are saying there are renovations being done. And they are refusing to refund me.

Uncomfortable, overpriced, and shady
We were there nearly 20 minutes before we saw a human that appeared to work there, maybe maintenance or part of the housekeeping crew; not sure as he didn’t have identification on his shirt, but he was undoubtedly an employee, but didn’t work behind the desk. He asked all of us in broken English (he seemed of middle eastern descent) and pointed at a sign not obviously visible, saying, “Check in at 3 pm, check-in at tres (Spanish)” as he pointed to the sign and then left the area. There was a $60 (in cash) deposit that was required before they’d give you your room key, no credit card accepted. Upon checking out, you would get this back in full (when we checked out, they just handed it to us with no room inspection, so I’m not sure what that was for.) The thing that rubbed us the wrong way was that this wasn’t listed on their site or through Hotels.com, and they had an ATM conveniently in their lobby, which the NYC 21 Hotel owned. At the time of this writing, Hotels.com listed it as “REQUIRED AT CHECK-IN: Credit card, debit card, or cash deposit required for incidental charges.” It costs $2.50 to get your money out as no banks are relatively close to the hotel. So, you're forced to get money or find your bank. So, either way, this Hotel is screwing you out of another $2.50. At nearly $200 a night, save your money. I’ve had better experiences at motels. The good things: Hot water and good water pressure Right next to the F subway train Check-out took seconds

Subway at your footsteps
No one was at the front desk when we arrived. Stood around for 20min and anyone could have walked in at that point. The staff reslly dint know what they are doing when it come to management. They were not aware that we had 2 rooms until we showed them the email. Rooms had scuff marks on the walls and terrible pillows. Showers were great with pressure and temperatures. Location is great for subway access but area looks sketchy. If you're on a budget and dont need much except a bed, pillow and shower, then this is a great place.

This is a good budget option for staying near the city. It was easy to get into the city from the subway station right next to the hotel. The staff was nice. I found it very noisy, i could hear everything in the hallway, the elevator beeping, the guests in nearby rooms coughing, the subway outside, cars on the road, etc. The room was pretty good although the walls are very scuffed up. The bathroom was nice. The window didnt latch shut and i could hear the wind howling in the crack. As a solo female traveler i found the area to be a bit intimidating, especially after seeing a few people behaving oddly, but maybe I'm just not as nonplussed as city people are. If you need an inexpensive option with easy access to the city, this is a good choice.
