History of the Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre opened in 1894 and was designed by famed Victorian architect Frank Matcham. The construction used private funds, and the building arose on the site of a former circus. The goal was to open 'the prettiest theatre in the land', and it was a success through World War I.

After World War II, the rise of TV and motion pictures caused a decline in ticket sales, but the theatre managed to survive through 1964 when it shut down until it was saved from demolition by being Grade II listed and renovated. It re-opened in 1981 and today is the UK National Theatre of Variety.

What to know about the Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre allows 'smart casual' dress – no football kits or tops and no shorts, but general casual dress is permitted. The theatre doesn't have parking facilities of its own, but the car park across from the building offers full spaces and Blue Badge spaces.

The theatre is also accessible for people with disabilities, offering captioned performances, audio-described performances, BSL-interpreted performances and wheelchair-accessible seating. Accessibility is a priority of the theatre, and they go to great lengths to ensure a great experience for everyone. Feel free to call them for any accommodation you need.
