Almeria

What you need to know before you go

The city of Almeria in south-east Spain is famed for the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress looming over the city, as well as the 16th-century fortified Almeria Cathedral. Other popular attractions include the underground network of tunnels known as the Civil War Shelters of Almeria, and the English Cable, a gigantic iron pier representing the mining industry that once sustained the city. Meanwhile, history lovers will enjoy seeing the archaeological artefacts and regional exhibits at the Museum of Almeria.

If you’re looking to spend a relaxing afternoon on soft, gold sand and endless stretches of dark blue water, Playa de San Miguel and Playa del Zapillo offer stunning beachfront views. At Paseo de Almeria, you’ll find big-name brands and boutique stores for shopping, and you’ll enjoy fantastic dining opportunities. When it’s time to escape the hustle and bustle, families head for the Parque de las Familias urban park.
