While there's plenty to do in Bayou St. John, some of the top attractions involve getting active. Biking is a popular way to travel throughout these streets. You don't even need to bring your own bicycle as the city offers the Blue Bikes bike-sharing programme. Alternatively, you can head out into the bayou itself, as this is also a prominent destination for kayaking.

Amongst the streets of Bayou St. John, you'll find plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy. The shops offer a wide variety of items including clothes, crafts, and just about anything else you can imagine. Handcrafted body soaps and incense are particularly popular.

For breakfast in Bayou St. John you can head to Lamara Coffee & Kitchen for homemade organic food, coffee, tea, or smoothies. On Bayou Road, you’ll find locally owned shops like the Community Book Centre and King & Queen Emporium.

Before you visit Bayou St. John, there are a few factors you should keep in mind. To take advantage of the bike-sharing programme, you'll need to download the accompanying app. Additionally, you can check numerous shops near the waterway to find kayaks and paddleboards for rent.

This area is on the northern side of New Orleans, but that still puts you close to attractions elsewhere. City Park, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the free Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden are easily accessible, though you'll have to travel a few miles south to reach Jackson Square and the French Quarter.
