What you need to know before you go

Kentucky is the US state that some may know best for its horseracing, a big automobile industry, and bluegrass music. For many others, it’s the birthplace of the world’s most recognised fried chicken franchise. Its largest city, Louisville, is a mecca for baseball fans, home to an important museum and factory that’s strikingly marked by the world’s largest baseball bat. 

Kentucky is also big on nature. It’s a US state that has plenty of navigable miles of water, particularly in the form of the major rivers running along its border. The namesake Kentucky River is a haven for outdoor adventures, passing through the dramatic gorges of the Kentucky River Palisades. Kentucky is also home to Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest cave system and just one of the beautiful underground features in the region dating back thousands of years.

    Every May, Louisville hosts the Kentucky Derby – a 2-week racing spectacle that brings hordes of equestrian enthusiasts to Churchill Downs to watch thoroughbreds thunder down the track.
