The San Fernando Cathedral was established in 1731 when 15 families arrived from the Canary Islands. It has undergone many renovations and expansions, but the original walls are still present in the cathedral sanctuary.

In the 1836 siege of the Alamo, the blood-red flag of no quarter was raised in the cathedral as a warning that the men inside the Alamo would not be spared. There is a coffin in the church that holds the remains of those who died at the Alamo. The cathedral has also hosted dignitaries from around the world, including Pope John Paul II.
